Summary: An exceptional opportunity exists for an experienced Consultant in Respiratory Medicine to join a progressive department in Greater London. The role involves delivering high-quality respiratory care, contributing to innovative services, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. This fixed-term position may transition to a substantive role for suitable candidates, with direct appointments possible for experienced consultants. The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing the department’s clinical excellence and service reputation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct three general respiratory clinics per week, managing a wide range of respiratory conditions.
- Lead one sleep clinic per week, focusing on sleep-disordered breathing and related disorders.
- Run one general respiratory triage clinic per week to assess and manage new referrals and urgent cases.
- Perform 1–3 bronchoscopy sessions per week, including diagnostic and interventional procedures.
- Participate in a 1 in 12 ward rota, including weekend cover.
- Contribute to the NIV on-call rota, supporting patients with acute and chronic respiratory failure.
- Take part in the general medical on-call rota (Monday–Thursday, 5 PM–9 PM on site, then remote cover).
Key Skills:
- MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
- Complete registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise.
- Experience in respiratory medicine at consultant level (or equivalent senior level).
- Comprehensive knowledge of respiratory medicine, including diagnostic and interventional procedures.
- Ability to effectively lead and work within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Understanding of emerging technologies in respiratory care (desirable).
- Awareness of national healthcare priorities and policy frameworks (desirable).
- Proven experience in respiratory medicine at a senior level.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multidisciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic, forward-thinking team dedicated to delivering high-quality respiratory care across a broad range of subspecialties. This role offers the chance to contribute to innovative services, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and play an active role in developing the department’s clinical excellence and service reputation. This position is available as a fixed-term contract with the potential to transition to a substantive post for suitable candidates. Experienced consultants who demonstrate the required skills and qualifications may be appointed directly to a substantive position.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Outpatient Clinics

- On-Call and Inpatient Commitments
- Participate in a 1 in 12 ward rota, including weekend cover.

Department Overview
Currently staffed by 11 consultants, with expansion to 14 consultants planned over the next two years. Supported by 7 SPR/Clinical Fellows/IMY3 and 7 FY/IMT doctors. Full EBUS, EUS, and pleural services in place, alongside a local MDT with thoracic surgery and oncology input, supported by three lung cancer nurse specialists. Medical thoracoscopy and advanced interventional bronchoscopy are due to commence shortly. Dedicated Respiratory HDU and complete physiology services (including CPET and four lung function labs). One of the most established virtual ward services in the country. Strong community-based respiratory services for asthma, bronchiectasis, and COPD in collaboration with hospital services.
Education and Qualifications
Essential: MRCP (UK) or equivalent. Complete registration with the General Medical Council and a licence to practise. Experience in respiratory medicine at consultant level (or equivalent senior level). Desirable: CCT in Respiratory Medicine (or within six months of completion at interview date) or inclusion on the Specialist Register. Postgraduate research qualification (PhD, MD, MD(Res), or equivalent).
