In WMG, we are undertaking research into how traditional Li-ion battery cell design can be optimised through the application of systems engineering, component modelling and data science. Creating new models and predictive tools to improve battery performance, lifetime and safety.
RaRR is a new project commenced in WMG in October 2025, funded by EPSRC and HVMC, with a focus on second-life battery degradation understanding, especially for micro-mobility systems. It also looks at building the capability of management of large volumes of multimodal data by designing and validating efficient and scalable data collection, curation, usage (e.g. for AI) and sharing strategies applicable to R&D environments such as WMG.
Therefore, the Battery Modelling team in WMG seeks a postdoctoral researcher to develop a data capture, storage and reuse strategy, as well as highly accurate and transferable RUL/SoH models for batteries from segregated sources and varying quality at large scale. The candidate will also lead the validation of the methodology's performance using real data. The ideal candidate blends data analytics and big data management, AI modelling and validation skills, and is comfortable engaging with academia, industry partners, and software teams.
About You
You will need a PhD (or be near submission) in a relevant discipline (could be Electrical/Power/Energy Systems, Control Engineering, Renewable Systems Engineering), along with excellent computing and programming skills in multiple languages and environments. You will also need a problem-solving ability to manage and analyse manufacturing datasets and the ability to publish high-quality academic outputs. You are expected to have proven experience in developing and applying predictive deep-learning models for data-driven analysis and forecasting tasks. Also have familiarity with emerging agentic AI solutions and their potential for autonomous decision-making and intelligent system orchestration. Familiarity with battery-related datasets across multiple scales and data types is preferred, and the ability to design user interfaces and dashboards is expected.
Data Project Specific Responsibilities
- Audit existing data and improve data collection strategies across battery applications to identify gaps and opportunities.
- Define requirements for real, synthetic and multi-modal data collection.
- Establish frameworks for data use beyond RaRR and develop a unified data platform and dashboard.
- Provide best-practice guidelines for data collection, control, and integration into existing activities, protection, safeguards and recovery (examples).
Ai
- Develop a predictive remaining Useful life and state-of-health model based on second-life battery data
- Investigate the transferability of the models between lab and real field data of the project's industrial partner
- Improve Autonomy and AI agency for model maintenance and recalibration
Principal Accountabilities
- Lead/co-author journal papers, conference papers and project reports.
- Work in a collaborative environment with project partners.
- Prepare slides and present at project meetings and international venues.
- Help establish a sound research base within the department to assist the development of research objectives and future proposals for own or joint research.
- Translate knowledge of advances in the subject area into research activity.
- Communicate complex information (orally and in writing) and material of a specialist or highly technical nature.
- Continually update own knowledge and understanding in the field or specialism.
Administration And Other Activities
May be required to attend departmental meetings and to participate (where necessary) in other committees and working groups within the department, the faculty and the University.

PhD Status
If you are near submission of your PhD, or have not yet had it conferred, any offers of employment will be made at Research Assistant level, at the highest spinal point of pay grade 5 (£34,610 per annum). Upon receipt of evidence confirming the successful award of your PhD, you will be promoted to Research Fellow, at the lowest spinal point of grade 6 (£35,608 per annum).
