Summary: The Staff Full Stack Engineer role is a contract position focused on Java and Python, with additional experience in Ruby on Rails, Rust, and React being advantageous. The position is remote and involves leading the migration from a legacy Rails monolith to a modern service-based architecture. The engineer will be responsible for designing and delivering microservices, ensuring robust testing, and improving system performance. This role requires strong technical leadership and communication skills to guide the engineering team through the transition.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leading feature-by-feature migration out of a legacy Rails monolith
  • Designing and delivering new microservices in Java and/or Python (Rust experience a bonus)
  • Working with product and engineering teams to map dependencies and define extraction strategy
  • Driving delivery end-to-end: design, build, refactor, test, deploy
  • Ensuring robust automated testing, integration and e2e coverage (including mobile touchpoints)
  • Creating documentation for API specs, architecture, deployment flows and service interactions
  • Improving system performance, reliability and observability as services scale
  • Helping standardise engineering processes across multiple teams

  • Advanced commercial experience with Java
  • Strong experience with Python or Rust
  • Background working with Ruby on Rails in production systems
  • Modern frontend experience - React ideally
  • REST or GraphQL API experience
  • Experience with MySQL/Redis and distributed architecture
