Summary: The SSAS Tabular / DAX Developer role involves building a new SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular model sourced from Salesforce, focusing on connectivity, data shaping, and performance optimization. Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up and validate Salesforce connectivity feeding a clean semantic layer for Tabular.
  • Define tables, relationships, and star-schema friendly structures for analytic performance.
  • Create/organize DAX measures, calculation items, KPIs, hierarchies, and friendly metadata.
  • Trim/simplify legacy metrics from the Dynamics-based model to a minimal, business-aligned set.
  • Run side-by-side validation between old and new models to confirm numeric parity and edge cases.
  • Optimize VertiPaq, define partitions and processing strategy.
  • Implement RLS/roles in Tabular; document security model and data-access assumptions.
  • Support cutover communications; deliver user training materials and short admin runbooks.

About the Engagement

We are building a new SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS) Tabular model sourced from Salesforce. Scope includes establishing Salesforce connectivity, trimming measures from a legacy Dynamics-based model, creating a lean Tabular model with DAX measures, validating via dual-model Excel/Power BI comparisons, tuning VertiPaq performance and security, and preparing users for cutover and training.

What You ll Do

Connectivity & Data Shaping

  • Set up and validate Salesforce connectivity (e.g., ADF/SSIS/OData/ODBC) feeding a clean semantic layer for Tabular.
  • Define tables, relationships, and star-schema friendly structures for analytic performance.

Tabular Model Build

  • Create/organize DAX measures, calculation items (if applicable), KPIs, hierarchies, and friendly metadata.
  • Trim/simplify legacy metrics from the Dynamics-based model to a minimal, business-aligned set.

Validation & UAT

  • Run side-by-side validation (Excel Pivot/Power BI) between old and new to confirm numeric parity and edge cases.

Performance & Governance

  • Optimize VertiPaq (cardinality reductions, encoding decisions), define partitions and processing strategy.
  • Implement RLS/roles in Tabular; document security model and data-access assumptions.

Cutover & Enablement

  • Support cutover communications; deliver user training materials and short admin runbooks (process/reprocess, role updates).

Must-Have Qualifications

  • SSAS Tabular expertise with a strong DAX background (measures, calc groups, KPIs, relationship modeling).
  • Demonstrated success refactoring/streamlining existing semantic models (measure trimming, naming standards, foldering).
  • Data integration experience pulling from Salesforce via ADF/SSIS/OData/ODBC; strong SQL for staging/modeling.
  • Proficiency validating models via Excel (Pivot) and/or Power BI; capable of coaching analysts through UAT.
  • Implemented RLS and role-based access patterns in Tabular; understands operational handoff (processing, deployment).

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with Dynamics 365 data domains (to inform measure trimming/mapping).
  • Hands-on with Tabular Editor (2/3), DAX Studio, Best Practice Analyzer; CI/CD for Tabular deployments.
