Posted 2 days ago by WA Consultants

Summary: The role of Software Engineer focuses on delivering robust software for critical communication and public safety systems, requiring strong hands-on experience with modern .NET. The position involves working on distributed systems and contributing to an established codebase, emphasizing reliability and observability. Candidates should be able to quickly adapt and contribute to the team while applying sound engineering practices. This is a contract opportunity with a rolling duration of 6 months, offering a competitive hourly rate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software using C# and modern .NET.
  • Work within an existing software platform and contribute to new features, improvements, and MVP delivery.
  • Develop and support distributed applications where performance, resilience, and monitoring are key considerations.
  • Apply sound engineering practices including source control, automated testing, CI/CD, and clean coding principles.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, solve technical problems, and deliver reliable software.
  • Contribute to systems that may integrate with communication technologies, protocols, or wider operational platforms.

Key Skills:

  • Strong hands-on C# and modern .NET experience, with the ability to get productive quickly in an existing codebase.
  • Solid experience building, maintaining, or improving distributed systems and integrated applications.
  • Practical observability experience, including logging, monitoring, tracing, diagnostics, metrics, or application health.
  • Confidence working beyond isolated standalone applications, ideally in complex or mission-critical software environments.
  • Experience with multithreaded applications, automated testing, TDD/BDD, and clean engineering practices.
  • Strong Git, CI/CD, and build pipeline experience, ideally including TeamCity or similar tools.
  • Useful technical exposure could include SQL, Docker, Linux, Wireshark, SIP signalling, RTP, digital radio, or critical communications systems.

Software Engineer - Modern .NET/Distributed Systems

Contract opportunity supporting mission-critical public safety communication systems

Location: Remote/Hybrid UK

6 months Rolling Contract

Rate: £45 per hour

IR35 Status: Outside IR35

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer with strong, hands-on modern .NET experience to join a team delivering robust software for critical communication and public safety environments. The client is looking for someone who can hit the ground running with coding in modern .NET, contribute quickly to an established codebase, and work confidently across distributed systems where reliability, maintainability, and observability are important.

The Role

You will be working on software used within complex, real-world communication systems. The role requires practical, current experience with modern .NET rather than exposure to one specific latest version. The focus is on solid engineering ability, strong C# coding skills, and confidence working on systems beyond isolated standalone applications.

Experience with observability in systems development is important. Candidates should be able to demonstrate practical exposure to building, supporting, monitoring, or improving systems where logging, monitoring, tracing, diagnostics, metrics, or application health have been part of the engineering approach. Exposure to distributed application development, including Microsoft Aspire or similar technologies, would be beneficial.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software using C# and modern .NET.
  • Work within an existing software platform and contribute to new features, improvements, and MVP delivery.
  • Develop and support distributed applications where performance, resilience, and monitoring are key considerations.
  • Apply sound engineering practices including source control, automated testing, CI/CD, and clean coding principles.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements, solve technical problems, and deliver reliable software.
  • Contribute to systems that may integrate with communication technologies, protocols, or wider operational platforms.

What You'll Bring

  • Strong hands-on C# and modern .NET experience, with the ability to get productive quickly in an existing codebase.
  • Solid experience building, maintaining, or improving distributed systems and integrated applications.
  • Practical observability experience, including logging, monitoring, tracing, diagnostics, metrics, or application health.
  • Confidence working beyond isolated standalone applications, ideally in complex or mission-critical software environments.
  • Experience with multithreaded applications, automated testing, TDD/BDD, and clean engineering practices.
  • Strong Git, CI/CD, and build pipeline experience, ideally including TeamCity or similar tools.
  • Useful technical exposure could include SQL, Docker, Linux, Wireshark, SIP signalling, RTP, digital radio, or critical communications systems.
  • Clear communicator who can work closely with technical teams, solve problems quickly, and deliver reliable software.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will be a confident hands-on developer who enjoys working on technically challenging systems and can balance coding quality with delivery. You should be comfortable joining an existing team, understanding the current solution, and making meaningful contributions quickly, particularly in a modern .NET environment where observability and distributed system thinking are part of day-to-day engineering.
