Summary: The User Research Lead (Lead Service Designer) role is a 6-month contract focused on driving digital transformation within NHS Wales. Key Responsibilities:
- Champion user-centred design across high-impact digital services in NHS Wales.
- Coach and mentor user researchers across DHCW to build capability and embed best practice.
- Shape strategy by selecting and applying the right research methodologies to complex healthcare journeys.
- Communicate insights clearly to influence design, policy, and service decisions.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with designers, product teams, and stakeholders to deliver inclusive and accessible services.
- Lead research planning and execution —from user testing and surveys to data synthesis and persona development.
Key Skills:
- Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience.
- Deep expertise in user research methods, usability testing, and agile service design.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to influence across disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience guiding digital services through complex transformation.
- Knowledge of accessibility standards, inclusive practices, and ethical research principles.
- Understanding of the digital and technical landscape in large-scale public or health organisations.
- Desirable: FEDIP Senior Practitioner or similar certification (e.g. CXA).
- Awareness of NHS Wales systems and priorities or wider NHS Systems.
