Summary: The role of Senior / Principal Highways Civil Engineer involves joining an infrastructure team to plan, design, and deliver major highways projects, particularly for National Highways. The position is primarily remote and is offered as an initial 6-month contract outside IR35. Candidates will be responsible for detailed design, project management, and stakeholder liaison, while also providing mentorship to junior engineers. Essential qualifications include a degree in Civil Engineering and significant experience in highways project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake detailed design of highways and associated infrastructure in accordance with DMRB and MCHW specifications.
  • Manage and contribute to the development of feasibility studies, detailed design packages, and technical reports for National Highways schemes.
  • Support project delivery through all RIBA stages, from concept to construction.
  • Prepare drawings, specifications, and contract documents using CAD (AutoCAD/Civil 3D) and other industry-standard software.
  • Lead or support liaison with National Highways, local authorities, statutory bodies, and other key stakeholders.
  • Ensure project documentation complies with CDM 2015 and other relevant UK legislation.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians.
  • Monitor project budgets, programme schedules, and quality performance.

Key Skills:

  • BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status (CEng/IEng), or working towards this with a relevant professional institution (ICE or CIHT).
  • Minimum 6 years' experience in the design and delivery of highways projects, with direct experience working on National Highways projects.
  • Strong knowledge of DMRB, MCHW, CDM Regulations, and National Highways standards and procedures.
  • Proficiency in design tools such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MX Road, and drainage design packages (e.g., MicroDrainage).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

About the Role
