Summary: The Senior HVDC Cable Engineer will lead design assurance activities for a major transmission project involving 525kV HVDC and 400kV AC cable systems. This role requires collaboration with various stakeholders to ensure design deliverables are met while providing technical assessments and mentoring junior engineers. The position offers the flexibility of remote work while contributing to the transformation of the UK’s energy infrastructure. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in cable system design and National Grid standards.
Key Responsibilities:
- Act as Lead Design Assurance Engineer (LDAE) for cable works in line with National Grid BP/SR188
- Lead and coordinate design and hazard review processes, meetings, and approvals
- Collaborate closely with the Lead Contractor Design Approval Engineer (LCDAE) to achieve design deliverables
- Support design and engineering for cable interfaces and related packages as required
- Provide independent technical assessments and resolve complex engineering challenges
- Participate in technical discussions and cable discipline forums
- Mentor junior engineers and share technical knowledge
- Ensure seamless design integration between 400kV AC substations and 525kV HVDC converter stations
- Deliver regular project progress updates to engineering leadership
- Review and approve key documents including ITPs, pre-qualification, type tests, and QA records
- Work with cable contractors (HVDC Prysmian, HVAC HEBAM/NKT) to secure National Grid Type Registration and SSEN-T equipment approvals
- Attend monthly progress meetings in Europe (Milan, Italy) as required (remote and in-person)
- Maintain thorough records in project document management systems
Key Skills:
- National Grid Design Assurance Engineer (TP141) authorisation, ideally as a Lead Design Assurance Engineer
- Strong background in 525kV HVDC and 400kV AC cable system design
- Proven track record on National Grid and SSEN transmission projects
- Expertise in pre-qualification, type testing, and factory acceptance testing for cable systems
- Deep understanding of National Grid standards, including: BP188/SR188 Design Management, SR106, SR183 Type Registration requirements, TS 2.01, TS 3.05.16, TS 3.05.07 (substations and HV cable systems), SCT36 Cable systems, NGET DH30 Capital Design Handbook
- Familiarity with SSEN-T standards and processes, such as: SP-NET-CAB-500, PR-NET-ENG-509, CDM 2015, ESQCR regulations, CIGRE TB 852, Electra 189, IEC 62067, IEC 61914, ENA TS specifications
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Strong stakeholder management with the ability to work across multiple levels of seniority and disciplines
- Team player with the ability to mentor and support junior engineers
