Summary: The SEN Mediation and Tribunal Officer role involves designing and managing mediation and tribunal processes for assessing additional educational needs for children and young people aged 0-25 within a Southwest Local Authority. The position requires extensive knowledge of relevant legislation and experience in SEN tribunal processes to ensure compliance with statutory duties and facilitate fair appeal systems for families. This is a full-time, initial 3-month contract with potential for remote work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage, arrange, and prepare work related to mediation for statutory appeals to the SEN & Disability Tribunal (SENDIST).
  • Ensure compliance with the Education Act 1996 and the DfE SEN Code of Practice through the development of a specialized service covering mediation and tribunals.
  • Implement agreements reached through mediation within required timescales.
  • Conduct preparation, assessment, research, and networking tasks for system development and management.

Key Skills:

  • Extensive experience and in-depth knowledge of the Education Act 1996, SEN Code of Practice, Children’s Act, and Equality Act.
  • Proven experience with SEN Tribunal processes and achieving positive outcomes for children and the Local Authority.
  • Thorough understanding of local authority procedures.
