Summary: The role of Senior Project Accountant is a short-term contract position focused on providing high-impact financial support within a leading UK charity. The primary responsibilities include reviewing project expenditures, ensuring alignment with contracts, and updating forecasts through to March 2027. Key Responsibilities:

  • Review general ledger transactions by project and compare against approved budgets
  • Cross-reference expenditure against previous commissioner and funder reporting, where applicable
  • Identify and review over- and under-expenditure with budget holders, escalating issues where needed
  • Prepare and post reallocation journals, maintaining clear audit trails and supporting evidence
  • Update project forecasts and support forward planning through to 2027/28
  • Review revised income, expenditure and forecasts with budget holders to confirm the agreed position
  • Prepare payroll allocation change forms for authorisation by line managers
  • Prepare commissioner or funder financial reports where required

Key Skills:

  • Qualified accountant or exceptionally strong technical accounting knowledge, including debits and credits
  • Proven experience as a Project Accountant, ideally within a charity or publicly funded environment
  • Strong understanding of funding and contract reporting to external commissioners or funders
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately under time pressure
  • High level of attention to detail, particularly in transaction review and journal preparation
  • Self-motivated and able to pick up new systems and processes rapidly with minimal handover
  • Confidence working within a large, complex organisation (c. 400 staff), making sound judgements on cost allocation
  • Advanced Excel skills, including Tables, SUMIFS, and ideally Index-Match / XLOOKUP
  • Previous remote delivery of short-term finance assignments
