Summary: The Principal Engineer will lead technical efforts in a complex mainframe modernization program, ensuring the delivery of cloud-native platforms that meet government standards. The engineer will be responsible for solution design, engineering standards enforcement, and guiding delivery teams. Occasional travel to London, Manchester, and Newcastle is expected.

Key Skills:
- Demonstrable experience as a Principal Engineer on large-scale modernization or platform programs.
- Strong background in cloud-native engineering on AWS, including Kubernetes-based platforms.
- Deep hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, and Node.js.
- Experience modernizing or integrating with mainframe or legacy enterprise systems.
- Proven ability to enforce engineering standards in regulated contexts.
- Strong understanding of Agile delivery, DevOps practices, CI/CD, and engineering lifecycle management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

This role combines deep handson technical expertise with strategic oversight, ensuring modern cloudnative platforms are delivered securely, reliably, and in line with government architectural, engineering, and assurance expectations. As the programme scales, the role may extend to multiteam and multivendor technical oversight.
Essential Skills And Experience Demonstrable experience as a Principal Engineer on largescale modernisation or platform programmes. Strong background in cloudnative engineering on AWS, including Kubernetesbased platforms. Deep handson experience with Java, Spring Boot, and Node.js, building scalable and resilient backend services. Experience modernising or integrating with mainframe or legacy enterprise systems in highvolume environments. Proven ability to enforce engineering standards and operate effectively within highgovernance, regulated, or public sector contexts. Strong understanding of Agile delivery, DevOps practices, CI/CD, and engineering lifecycle management. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce and assure highquality technical documentation.
