- Strong hands-on experience in payroll compliance and payroll tax compliance
- Working knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax regulations, including multi-state considerations
- Experience with payroll tax reconciliations, filings, and audits or notice resolution
- Ability to analyze payroll data and identify discrepancies
- Strong documentation and communication skills
- Able to work independently in a remote, part-time capacity
Preferred Qualifications
- Workday Payroll or HCM experience (nice to have, not required)
- Experience with a pension fund, benefits, or similar public/union-sector organization
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or FPC certification
- Experience supporting payroll system implementations or remediation projects
Responsibilities
- Review payroll processes, configurations, and controls for compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations
- Assess payroll tax setup, including withholding, deposits, and filings, and identify errors or risks
- Support reconciliation of payroll tax liabilities, quarterly filings (941, state/local equivalents), and year-end reporting (W-2, W-3)
- Recommend and help implement corrective actions and process improvements
- Document payroll compliance procedures, findings, and remediation steps
- Work with HR, Finance, and project stakeholders to resolve compliance issues
- Provide guidance on regulatory changes affecting payroll and payroll taxes
