Summary: A local authority in Devon is seeking an experienced Locum Litigation Lawyer to join its Legal Services team. Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide expert legal advice and support on a wide range of complex and often contentious matters across all Council services
  • Manage a varied caseload including civil and commercial litigation, housing matters, and enforcement work
  • Prepare and conduct cases before civil courts, criminal courts, and tribunals, including advocacy where appropriate
  • Handle prosecutions in areas such as planning, environmental health, and licensing
  • Instruct Counsel where necessary and oversee cases through to final hearings and appeals
  • Negotiate settlements, including through alternative dispute resolution and arbitration
  • Support the Legal Services Manager and wider Litigation Team on complex or high-profile cases

Key Skills:

  • Qualified Solicitor, Barrister, or Chartered Legal Executive in England & Wales
  • Demonstrable experience in litigation within a local authority or public sector environment
  • Strong working knowledge of civil litigation, housing law, and regulatory enforcement
  • Advocacy experience and confidence managing cases independently
  • Excellent analytical, drafting, and communication skills
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment

Salary (Rate): £60 per hour

The Role
A well-regarded local authority is seeking an experienced Locum Litigation Lawyer to join its Legal Services team. Working as part of a small and supportive legal team, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality legal advice and representation across a broad range of contentious matters. This is an excellent opportunity to support a busy and collaborative team during a period of increased demand.
