Summary: The role of Linux Administrator involves managing and optimizing Linux systems primarily in a remote capacity for a public sector organization in Edinburgh. The position requires strong expertise in various Linux distributions and server administration, with a focus on security and performance. The contract is initially for four weeks, with the possibility of extensions, and is classified as outside IR35.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administer and manage Linux systems across RHEL/Rocky and Ubuntu distributions.
  • Perform package management, systemd service management, and day-to-day server administration.
  • Implement security measures using SELinux/AppArmor, SSH hardening, and auditd.
  • Manage user/group configurations and utilize performance analysis tools.
  • Configure and manage firewalld/iptables, bonding, VLANs, LVM, NFS, and multipath.
  • Oversee application configuration and management for services like Apache and JBoss.
  • Utilize SaltStack for configuration management and automation across server estates.
  • Employ Bash/Python scripting and Git-based workflows for automation tasks.
  • Manage VM lifecycle and storage using the Nutanix HCI platform.
  • Monitor infrastructure using Grafana and Zabbix, and collaborate with development teams.

Key Skills:

  • Strong Linux administration skills, particularly with RHEL/Rocky and Ubuntu.
  • Experience with SELinux/AppArmor, SSH hardening, and auditd.
  • Proficiency in performance analysis tools like sar, iostat, and strace.
  • Knowledge of firewalld/iptables, bonding, VLANs, LVM, NFS, and multipath.
  • Experience with application management tools such as Apache and JBoss.

  • Solid Bash/Python scripting skills and experience with Git-based workflows.

Detailed Description From Employer:

ASA Recruitment’s client, a Public Sector organisation in Edinburgh, are currently looking to recruit a Linux Administrator on a mostly remote basis, for an initial 4 week contract (with potential extensions) on a rate of c.£550-£600/day outside of IR35 (based on experience).

Essential Experience:

  • Strong Linux administration across RHEL/Rocky 7, 8 and 9 and Ubuntu 22.04/24.04, including package management (dnf/apt), systemd service management and day-to-day server administration.
  • Experience with SELinux/AppArmor, SSH hardening, auditd, user/group management and performance analysis tools such as sar, iostat and strace to harden server security and optimise performance.
  • Knowledge of firewalld/iptables, bonding, VLANs, LVM, NFS and multipath configuration and management in a large-scale infrastructure
  • Application configuration and management on tools and applications such as Apache, Samba, JBoss, NFS and similar services, ensuring availability, performance and security across the estate.
  • Knowledge and experience of configuration management and automation using SaltStack — state files, Pillar, Grains and orchestration across a large server estate, with solid Bash/Python scripting and Git-based (Azure DevOps) workflows
  • Knowledge of the Nutanix HCI platform, using Prism for VM lifecycle management, storage containers, snapshots and data protection.
  • Experience of using Grafana and Zabbix for infrastructure monitoring and familiarity around CI/CD pipelines and a collaborative approach to working with infrastructure and development teams.

Desirable Experience:

  • Experience with the installation, configuration and management of OpenStack Swift for object storage, and Rundeck for job scheduling and operational runbook automation.
