Summary: The Lead Engineer – Level 4 position is a remote role focused on overseeing large-scale renewable energy projects, including solar, BESS, wind, and hydrogen systems. Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all assigned substation projects from conception through construction and commissioning.
  • Collaborate with the Early-Stage Project Manager to support engineering requirements and scope.
  • Provide training, due diligence, and technical oversight of external engineers of record for compliance.
  • Secure engineering consulting resources and develop scopes of work.
  • Work with stakeholders to develop and secure substation sites and necessary permits.
  • Source and contract geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services.
  • Coordinate with groups to ensure project success and represent interests in meetings.
  • Assist during review of interconnection documentation and ensure compliance with requirements.
  • Communicate with transmission owners/operators to meet project deliverables.
  • Oversee project long lead major material orders to minimize risks.
  • Provide support to Estimating with template updates and technical support.
  • Collaborate with project engineering resources to determine priorities and work plans.
  • Ensure projects are implemented efficiently and safely according to standards.
  • Participate in project commissioning activities.
  • Assist Legal in regulatory filings and hearings.
  • Work with component OEMs to enhance designs for integration.

Key Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering required.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) certification strongly preferred.

Our client is a renewable energy company working on large-scale projects including solar, BESS, wind, and hydrogen systems. This position performs engineering assignments ranging from limited scope and complexity to advanced projects requiring expertise in multiple disciplines. The role operates under varying levels of supervision depending on experience, with increasing independence at higher levels. Responsibilities include assisting with project management, negotiations, performance tracking, and reporting.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Oversee all assigned substation projects from conception (Early Stage) through construction and commissioning (Execution)
  • During the conceptual phase, collaborate with the Early-Stage Project Manager to support engineering requirements and scope with the Development Group
  • Provide training, due diligence, and technical oversight of external engineers of record (EOR) for all assigned substation projects to ensure compliance with required generation interconnection agreements, scope of work documents, project specifications, site specific design requirements, IEEE, NESC, ASCE and all other applicable industry codes and standards
  • Secure engineering consulting resources from a list of approved suppliers by developing a scope of work, securing bids, evaluating, and awarding work through the Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) Group
  • Work with other project stakeholders to develop and secure a substation site, support any engineering updates, data and permits necessary to design and build the substation
  • Competitively source, select and contract geotechnical, survey, engineering, and construction services, and support the Cost Estimating Team with scope assumptions
  • Coordinate with other groups to ensure that the assigned substation projects are successful and represent internal and external interests on assigned projects, including presentations/briefings on current progress, issues, and risk mitigation in meetings with various levels of management
  • Assist Transmission Services during review of interconnection documentation including system impact studies, facility studies, reactive and harmonic studies and interconnection agreements and ensure that Transmission Owner requirements and engineering design are consistent and in compliance with all ISO requirements and incorporated into the project design
  • Communicate with respective transmission owners/operators/ISOs to ensure project deliverables will meet specific off-taker requirements, are timely and accurate
  • Oversee all project long lead major material orders to minimize risk of delays or exceeding the project budget and assist ISC with all substation project SOW creation, review, approval, and preparation of shopping carts for engineering services and materials in a timely manner
  • Provide support to Estimating with template updates via project feedback, technical support, and scope modifications
  • Collaborate with project engineering resources in various disciplines to determine project priorities, work plans and lines of demarcation
  • Ensure projects are efficiently, cost effectively and safely implemented in accordance with department process, procedures, industry standards and policies
  • Participate in assigned project commissioning activities to meet corporate objectives
  • Assist Legal in any regulatory filings, depositions and/or hearings
  • Work with component OEMs to enhance/adapt their designs to better integrate with company philosophies

Education and Experience

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering required
