Interim Legal Counsel / Contract Drafting Specialist
Location: the role is remote, with occasional in person meetings. Please note that you must be based in the UK and have the right to work in the UK.
About the Role
We are looking for a highly precise and articulate English Qualified Lawyer to join us for an initial short-term engagement. This role is focused purely on the craft of drafting. We don't just need standard templates; we need a specialist capable of taking complex legal concepts and translating them into clear, enforceable, and simplified language. If you are a lawyer who is passionate about "plain English" drafting and legal design, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
- Multi-Disciplinary Drafting: Efficiently draft and review a high volume of agreements across Employment (contracts, settlement agreements, handbooks), Commercial (services agreements, NDAs, terms of business), and Company/Corporate law and other fields.
- Adaptable: open to working in and finding resources in legal fields that you may not have experience - eg housing law.
- Language Simplification: Lead a project to modernize our contract suite. You will be responsible for stripping away unnecessary "legalese" to create user-friendly, commercially viable documents without sacrificing legal protection.
- Template Management: Create and standardize robust templates to streamline future legal workflows.
- Risk Mitigation: Ensure all drafted documents are compliant with current UK legislation and minimise risk exposure.
- Legal Tech and Drafting Automation - work with data scientists to automate the contract suite.
The Ideal Candidate
Qualification: Ideally a qualified Solicitor or Barrister in England & Wales (Current practicing certificate preferred). Will consider other qualifications and paralegals etc - but note the high bar of experience in contract drafting. Dual Qualification: Candidates who are Dual Qualified (e.g., US/NY, Irish, or EU jurisdictions) will be looked upon favorably.
Experience: Proven experience (suggested 2–6 years PQE) managing a mixed workload. "Eagle Eye": Your attention to detail must be flawless. You spot the missing comma, the defined term that wasn't defined, and the cross-reference that goes nowhere. Drafting Style: You possess the ability to write concisely and clearly. You understand that the best contracts are those the business can actually read and understand.
Why Join Us?
Impact: Make a tangible difference by reshaping the way legal documents communicate. Flexibility: Initial 1-3 month contract. For the right person we can work around your schedule day to day. Culture: Fast-paced, innovative, and no-nonsense environment.
How to Apply
Please send your CV and a brief cover note highlighting your experience. Note: This is an immediate requirement, and we will be interviewing on a rolling basis.
