Summary: The role of Interim IT Infrastructure Lead involves conducting discovery work to document the current infrastructure estate of an international PE-backed business. Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct discovery work to map and document the organization's current infrastructure estate.
- Analyze and document the existing environment across cloud platforms, network, identity, storage, and backups.
- Collaborate with incoming Infrastructure Management to support their onboarding.
- Build an evidence-based view of the infrastructure estate and convert knowledge into structured documentation.
- Identify and document risks, gaps, and unknowns within the infrastructure.
- Ensure the environment can be understood and operated without reliance on individual knowledge.
Key Skills:
- Strong hands-on infrastructure background, preferably in cloud-first environments.
- Experience in estate discovery and technical documentation.
- Ability to work in legacy or inherited environments.
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and low-maturity environments.
- Able to constructively challenge and validate assumptions.

IT Infrastructure Lead (Contract) – Discovery & Documentation | UK Remote | Outside IR35 | Strong £Rate
I’m working with an international PE backed business to engage an interim Infrastructure Lead to undertake a piece of discovery work to map out and document the organisations current infrastructure estate across cloud platforms, network, identity, storage, back-ups etc. The company have grown via a large number of acquisitions and are currently implementing a new centralised operating model. There is therefore a lot of uncertainty and fragmented information. This assignment is to map out the landscape, perform the relevant analysis and accurately document the current environment. Before then working with the incoming Infrastructure Management to support their onboarding.
You’ll be responsible for building a true, evidence-based view of the organisation’s infrastructure estate, capturing knowledge that currently sits in people’s heads and turning it into structured, trusted documentation. This would suit a Senior Infrastructure Leader or perhaps an Infrastructure Architect / Lead who has a strong technical background and has progressed in to assessing/documenting as-is landscapes. The goal? To ensure the environment can be understood, operated, and owned without dependency on individuals.
By the end of the contract, the business will have:
- A validated inventory of its infrastructure estate
- Clear, owned and maintainable documentation
- A transparent view of risks, gaps, and unknowns
- Zero reliance on “tribal knowledge” to operate safely
