Interim Human Resources Advisor

Role summary and responsibilities

Reporting to the General Manager, you will provide support to employees in all matters relating to HR, providing guidance and advice in line with current employment legislation.

You will be the main HR contact, supporting across two business units, with a dotted reporting line into the Group HR Manager, who will provide you with guidance and support.

Your time will typically be split between the two business units: 3 days per week on Signature Rail and 2 days per week on Imperial. You will work closely with HR partners from different business units, meaning you will always have support available.

Your responsibilities

  • Support line managers in all matters relating to HR including terms and conditions, absence, performance, employee relations and flexible working requests.
  • Ensure adherence to all company policies, procedures and legal requirements, with clear audit trails and maintain all personnel records in accordance with the GDPR.
  • Offer advice, arranging and supporting investigations, disciplinary and grievance hearings within policy.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of UK employment law and ensure management teams are appropriately updated on new employment legislation.
  • Support with recruitment needs and working with the talent partner.
  • Manage the onboarding process – create offer letters and contracts, ensure all pre-employment checks are completed; liaise with line managers and create role-specific induction programmes.
  • Maintain all benefit policies for both business units – add new starters, lapse leavers, check invoices before sending for approval, manage renewal process and claims, provide data for annual travel insurance renewal.
  • Manage payroll instructions and conduct monthly checks to ensure accuracy.
  • Update and communicate policies, assisting with any queries and ensuring all relevant paperwork is produced.
  • Maintain employee personnel files and Workday data, in line with GDPR.
  • Manage the talent management programme for both business units.
  • Support the development of staff, ensuring PDPs are in place where appropriate, and manage the internal training platform.
  • Manage succession planning within the business units, ensuring all critical roles have successors in place.
  • Utilise AI to drive efficiencies within own role and support AI training and skills development across all functions.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, providing accurate HR data and documentation as required.
  • Provide HR reports on recruitment, retention and key trends within the business.
  • Manage the annual HR cycle, ensuring all deadlines are met in relation to goal setting, performance reviews, compensation changes, engagement surveys and talent reviews.
  • Support with project work as determined by HR Manager and BU Leads.
  • Complete regular employee pulse interviews, flagging key issues and acting on results.
  • Office admin duties.
  • Any other reasonable requests.

More about the role

While the role is predominantly remote, you may be required to travel to our York office on occasion, to assist with on-site activity.

Key skills and experience

  • Degree or BTEC Diploma qualification desirable.
  • CIPD Level 5 desirable.
  • Previous experience within a HR Specialist/Advisor role.
  • Experience using Workday or similar HRIS.
  • Essential working knowledge of employment legislation and HR procedures and policies.
  • Ability to contribute to large projects with changing priorities.
  • Experience of corresponding and communicating with employees and management.
  • Proven experience at working within a constantly changing environment.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team building skills, comfortable interacting and motivating personnel at all levels of the organisation.
  • Willing to occasionally travel both domestically and internationally, e.g. to attend collaboration events.
