IBM z/OS Operating Systems Engineer (Systems Programmer)

This is a remote role (USA only).

We are seeking a senior z/OS Operating Systems Engineer / Systems Programmer to support and enhance a mission-critical IBM mainframe environment running 24/7 enterprise workloads.

This role focuses on z/OS system administration, performance, availability, and modernization.

The client is hiring a senior IBM z/OS Operating Systems Engineer (Systems Programmer) who can own and operate the core mainframe OS layer in a 24/7, mission-critical enterprise environment.

• Deep z/OS systems expertise:

  • z/OS installation, upgrades, and maintenance

  • SMP/E, PTFs, fixes, version upgrades

  • IPLs, system recovery, and LPAR management

  • Strong understanding of z/OS internals and architecture

• Production & availability ownership:

  • Experience in 24/7 production environments

  • Handling incidents, outages, and recovery

  • Ensuring high availability and disaster recovery readiness

  • Comfortable working during maintenance windows and critical events

• Performance & capacity management:

  • Hands-on with RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON

  • Workload Management (WLM) tuning

  • Capacity planning and system optimization

• Core mainframe operational skills:

  • JCL, ISPF, SDSF, TSO

  • System datasets, catalogs, and SMS

  • Collaboration with DB2, middleware, storage, and application teams

• Enterprise mindset:

  • Change management, incident response, RCA

  • Security, audit, and regulatory compliance

  • Supporting modernization and integration with distributed platforms

Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced z/OS Operating Systems Engineer to support, maintain, and enhance mission-critical IBM mainframe environments. The role focuses on z/OS system administration, performance, availability, security, and modernization, supporting high-volume enterprise applications in a 24/7 production environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade IBM z/OS operating systems
• Perform SMP/E maintenance, PTFs, fixes, and version upgrades
• Manage LPARs, system IPLs, and system recovery activities
• Monitor and tune system performance using RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON, and related tools
• Ensure high availability, system reliability, and disaster recovery readiness
• Support capacity planning and workload management (WLM)
• Administer system datasets, catalogs, and storage management (SMS)
• Collaborate with application, database, middleware, and infrastructure teams
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex system-level issues
• Participate in change management, incident response, and root cause analysis
• Ensure compliance with security, audit, and regulatory standards
• Support modernization initiatives and integration with distributed platforms

Required Skills & Qualifications:

• 8+ years of hands-on experience as a z/OS Systems Programmer / OS Engineer
• Strong expertise in IBM z/OS internals and architecture
• Extensive experience with SMP/E, IPLs, and system maintenance
• Proficiency with JCL, ISPF, SDSF, and TSO
• Experience with performance management tools (RMF, SMF, OMEGAMON)
• Solid understanding of Workload Management (WLM)
• Experience supporting 24/7 enterprise production environments
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
