IBM Sterling System Administrator

SOFT's client located in Remotely is looking for a IBM Sterling System Administrator for a long term contract assignment.

Qualifications:

Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (sometimes equivalent experience accepted in lieu of degree) Relevant certifications are a plus (see below)

Technical Skills

File Transfer Protocols: SFTP, FTP/FTPS, HTTP/HTTPS

MFT Platforms: Experience with tools like IBM Sterling File Gateway, Axway, Sterling Secure Proxy, Sterling Connect Direct

Scripting: Shell scripting (Bash), PowerShell, Python, or Perl for automation

Operating Systems: Strong knowledge of Linux/Unix and Windows Server administration

Networking: Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, load balancers, and network security

Databases: Basic SQL knowledge for querying transfer logs/status

Security: PGP/GPG encryption, SSH key management, certificate management (SSL/TLS)

Scheduling Tools: Experience with job schedulers (e.g., Control-M, AutoSys, Cron)

Experience

5-7+ years in IT infrastructure, systems administration, or a similar technical role

Direct experience configuring and maintaining MFT solutions

Background in troubleshooting failed transfers and diagnosing connectivity issues

Certifications (Preferred, not always required) Vendor-specific certifications (e.g., IBM Sterling, Axway certifications) ITIL Foundation (useful for ticketing/change management environments) Certifications in relevant OS platforms (Linux, Microsoft)

Soft Skills

Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills

Attention to detail (critical for data integrity/security)

Ability to work under pressure during outages or failed transfer incidents

Clear documentation habits

Communication skills to liaise with business partners and internal teams

Compliance Knowledge (Industry-Dependent)

Additional Responsibilities Often Tied to Qualifications

On-call availability for after-hours support

Experience with monitoring/alerting tools (Splunk, Nagios, SolarWinds)

Change management process experience

Vendor/partner onboarding for file transfer setups

Responsibilities:

Deploys the release of new technologies as well as designs, installs, configures, maintains and performs system integration testing of PC/server operating systems, related utilities and hardware.

Responsible for trouble shooting server problems as reported by users.

Researches, evaluates and recommends software and hardware products.

Supports Web access and electronic messaging services and maintains a secure systems environment.

Provides new hardware specifications to users based on application needs and anticipated growth, installs new servers and maintains the server infrastructure.
