Summary: This remote role seeks a senior Z/OS Database System Engineer to manage and protect high-volume DB2 for z/OS environments within a large-scale retail enterprise. The position requires deep expertise in IBM mainframe database systems, focusing on mission-critical transactions where downtime is unacceptable. Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and protect DB2 for z/OS environments supporting high-volume retail transactions.
  • Perform installation, upgrades, configuration, and performance tuning of DB2 databases.
  • Handle backup, recovery, high availability, disaster recovery, and data replication.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot production incidents and batch job issues.
  • Work in 24x7 production environments, ensuring minimal downtime.
  • Utilize performance monitoring tools to diagnose bottlenecks under peak loads.
  • Collaborate on hybrid integration of mainframe and cloud/distributed systems.

Key Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with IBM Z/OS database systems.
  • Strong expertise in DB2 for z/OS (installation, configuration, tuning, backup, recovery).

This is a remote role (USA only).

We are looking for a hands-on Z/OS Database System Engineer to support a large-scale retail enterprise environment running high-volume, mission-critical transactions.

This is a senior, hands-on IBM mainframe database specialist role focused on mission-critical Z/OS database platforms.

Core intent of the role:
The client wants someone who can own, run, and protect large-scale DB2 for z/OS environments that support high-volume retail transactions, where downtime is not acceptable.

What matters most to the client

  1. Deep DB2 for z/OS expertise

    • Installation, upgrades, configuration

    • Performance tuning (buffer pools, indexes, SQL tuning)

    • Backup, recovery, HADR, and data replication

    • Production incident handling

  2. Strong Z/OS operational skills

    • JCL, ISPF, SDSF

    • Batch job troubleshooting

    • Understanding how DB2 interacts with Z/OS internals

  3. Production & performance mindset

    • Experience with OMEGAMON, RMF, SMF

    • Ability to diagnose bottlenecks under peak retail loads

    • Comfortable working in 24x7 production environments

  4. Retail / high-transaction domain exposure

    • Consumer platforms

Responsibilities:
Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience with IBM Z/OS database systems
  • Strong expertise in DB2 for z/OS (installation, configuration, tuning, backup, recovery)
  • Experience with IMS DB and related tools is a strong plus
  • Solid understanding of Z/OS architecture, JCL, SDSF, ISPF, and batch processing
  • Hands-on experience with performance and monitoring tools (OMEGAMON, RMF, SMF)
  • Experience in high-volume transaction environments (retail, banking, or large enterprise)
  • Knowledge of data replication, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in production-critical environments with minimal downtime

Preferred / Nice-to-Have:

  • Experience supporting big-box retail or large-scale consumer environments
  • Exposure to hybrid integration (mainframe + distributed/cloud systems)
  • Experience with DevOps or automation tools for mainframe environments
  • IBM certifications in DB2 or Z/OS
  • Knowledge of COBOL, CICS, MQ, and related mainframe technologies
