Job Description
About the role You will work on Nova, AllyDVM's core platform powering Connect, the PetPage backend, GraphQL APIs for data partners, and background processing for veterinary practice communications (SMS, email, appointments, loyalty, telehealth, and more). This is a mature, high-traffic Rails monolith with active work across performance, security, Auth0 MFA, and ActiveStorage.
What you'll do
- Design, build, test, and maintain features across the full stack: Rails backend, MySQL data layer, web UI, and GraphQL/REST APIs.
- Own features end-to-end: requirements, implementation, automated tests, deployment support, and production follow-up.
- Integrate with internal systems and third-party platforms (SMS, email, identity, storage, analytics).
- Improve application performance, reliability, and security (webhook hardening, auth/session work, etc.).
- Work in a team that ships frequently via GitHub Actions to AWS Elastic Beanstalk, with Sidekiq workers and Lambda functions in the mix.
Required experience
- 5+ years building production web applications across backend and frontend.
- Strong Ruby on Rails experience, including ActiveRecord, controllers/services/workers, background jobs, and migrations.
- Strong JavaScript experience building production web UIs and integrating with backend APIs.
- Solid SQL / MySQL skills: schema design, query optimization, indexing, and debugging slow queries.
- Experience building and consuming REST and GraphQL APIs.
- Familiarity with automated testing (unit, integration, and browser/feature tests).
- Experience with Redis and background job systems (Sidekiq or equivalent).
- AWS experience in at least some of: S3, SQS/SNS, Lambda, CloudWatch, Elastic Beanstalk (or similar PaaS deployment).
- Ability to analyze complex, cross-domain business problems and deliver pragmatic solutions.
- Strong understanding of OOP, service design, and maintainable architecture in a large codebase.
Strongly preferred
- Experience upgrading or maintaining large legacy Rails apps (Rails 6/7 migrations, gem upgrades, deprecation cleanup).
- Experience with Auth0 or similar identity providers (MFA, SSO, session lifecycle).
- Experience with messaging platforms: Twilio, SendGrid, or telecom/SMS compliance (A2P/10DLC).
- Docker and GitHub Actions CI/CD.
- GraphQL in production (schema design, batching/loaders, API versioning/compatibility).
- ActiveStorage / file upload pipelines (image/video processing, public/private S3 URLs).
- Performance tuning in Rails (caching, queue design).
- Security-minded development (CSRF/session hardening, webhook validation).
- i18n/localization experience.
