Summary: The Frontend Technical Architect role involves leading the architectural framework for migrating a global B2B Product Store from a legacy JSP storefront to a modern headless React/Next.js storefront hosted in Azure. This position requires collaboration with various teams including backend architects, product owners, and DevOps. The role is remote and is offered on an initial 6-month contract basis. The candidate will be responsible for defining scalable architecture, technology leadership, and mentoring frontend developers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Architecture & Design
  • Define scalable and performable React/Next.js storefront architecture, integration layers, and BFF.
  • Where suitable, propose and architect micro frontends to be reused across other streams
  • Analyze the frontend architecture of existing React/Next.js applications and identify reusable components and practices to optimize development efforts.
  • Technology Leadership
  • Champion best practices for testing (unit, integration, E2E) and define testing strategy and frameworks
  • In collaboration with performance engineer, design a performance-testing strategy (load, stress, SSR benchmarks). Define and establish best practices during development to achieve best performance.
  • Address SSR challenges
  • Internationalization & Multisite
  • Architect solution for multi-language, multi-brand, and multi-country storefront requirements
  • Cloud & CI/CD
  • Based on existing setup for other React applications,
  • Design deployment architecture in Azure: app services, CDN, storage accounts, and infrastructure-as-code.
  • Define CI/CD pipelines covering build, test, security scans, and blue-green or canary releases.
  • State & Session Management
  • Specify strategies for client-side state (Redux/Context) vs. SSR, and secure session management (token renewal, cookie policies).
  • Observability & Analytics
  • Integrate logging and monitoring (Application Insights or equivalent).
  • Architect analytics tracking (Google Analytics) to capture page views, performance timings, and business events.
  • Accessibility & SEO
  • Define an accessibility testing strategy integrated into CI pipelines.
  • Ensure robust server-side rendering for SEO (meta tags, sitemaps, hreflang).
  • Composable Integrations
  • Lead integration with SAP Commerce CMS and propose a future headless CMS architecture (Contentstack).
  • Architect microfrontend boundaries and dynamic composition, managing version conflicts across micro-apps.
  • Feature Management & Security
  • Design feature-toggle patterns (Split.io and SAP Commerce backend capabilities) for phased rollouts.
  • Specify authentication/authorization flows for customer login and secure API calls.
  • Governance & Mentorship
  • Establish coding standards, code-review processes, and Architectural Decision Records
  • Mentor frontend developers and run architecture workshops.
  • Short term engagement: could be e.g. 3 months full time, and then 3-6 months part time, we’ll have to evaluate depending on the rate and candidate experience

Key Skills:

  • A successful candidate will have over seven years of architectural experience in eCommerce – preferably having led a large-scale SAP Commerce Cloud accelerator migration to a headless frontend.
  • Should be highly proficient in React/Next.js, Node.js, with deep understanding of BFF patterns, microfrontend architectures, and composable-commerce principles.
  • Frameworks & Languages: React, Next.js, Mosaic
  • Cloud & DevOps: Azure (App Services, Functions, CDN), Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions CI/CD
  • Testing & Performance: Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress
  • Architecture Patterns: BFF design, microfrontends, composable commerce concepts

Whitehall Resources are currently looking for a Frontend Technical Architect on a remote basis for an initial 6 month contract.

Our client are looking for a Frontend technical architect for Digital Commerce Development.
As a Frontend Technical Architect, you will establish the framework for migrating the clients global B2B Product Store built on SAP Commerce Cloud from a legacy JSP storefront to a modern, headless React/Next.js storefront hosted in Azure.
You will report to the Digital Commerce Development Manager and work closely with backend architects, product owners, DevOps, UX and QA.
