Summary: The Freelance Content Leveler (Science) at Newsela is responsible for adapting reading materials to create accessible content for diverse student audiences. This role requires a commitment to developing engaging, culturally responsive resources while ensuring grade-appropriate content. Candidates should possess experience in editing or writing, particularly in educational contexts, and have a strong understanding of various subject matters, especially in science. The position is compensated on a per-task basis and is fully remote.
Key Responsibilities:
- Adapting the reading level of original articles to create four different versions at lower reading levels.
- Ensuring content is grade-appropriate by considering vocabulary complexity, sentence structure, and length.
- Participating in projects involving instructional standards tagging within Newsela articles.
- Monitoring original articles for mistakes and inaccuracies.
Key Skills:
- Experience as an editor, journalist, or writer, preferably with educational publishers.
- Background in EdTech, tech, or media organizations.
- Preferred education or experience in science or education-related fields.
- Ability to write and edit for diverse audiences.
- Understanding of empathetic writing and unified voice.
- Knowledge of specific content areas such as Social Studies, ELA, or Science.
- Experience in education or childcare settings.
- Familiarity with Newsela products and language.
