Summary: The Environmental Engineering – AI Data Trainer role involves collaborating with leading AI research labs to enhance AI models through the application of environmental engineering expertise. Candidates will design complex technical problems, author solutions, audit AI outputs, and provide feedback to improve AI reasoning. This freelance position offers flexibility and the opportunity to work remotely while making a significant impact in the field. A strong background in environmental engineering is essential for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design Complex Technical Problems — Develop advanced environmental engineering scenarios covering contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment systems, hydrology, Life Cycle Assessments (LCA), and more
- Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Write rigorous, step-by-step technical responses including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and pollutant dispersion simulations that serve as benchmark answers
- Audit AI-Generated Outputs — Evaluate AI-produced remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and mathematical reasoning for technical accuracy, safety, and regulatory compliance (EPA, ISO 14001, and more)
- Sharpen AI Reasoning — Identify logical errors such as incorrect stoichiometry in biological treatment processes or failure to account for secondary environmental impacts, and provide structured feedback to improve model performance
Key Skills:
- Advanced Degree: Master's (pursuing or completed) or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental focus, or a closely related discipline
- Domain Expertise: Strong foundational knowledge in one or more areas — aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation
- Clear Technical Communicator: Ability to explain complex ecological and engineering concepts in precise, well-structured written form
- Detail-Oriented: High precision when checking unit conversions, chemical equations, and regulatory compliance logic
- No prior AI experience required — we'll get you up to speed
- Experience with data annotation, quality evaluation, or technical review workflows (nice to have)
- Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., SWMM, AERMOD, EPA tools) (nice to have)
- Background in EHS compliance or environmental consulting (nice to have)
