Summary: The role of Environmental Engineering – AI Data Trainer involves collaborating with leading AI research labs to enhance AI's capabilities in environmental engineering. The position requires designing complex engineering scenarios, developing benchmark solutions, auditing AI outputs for accuracy, and providing feedback to improve AI reasoning. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role allowing for a commitment of 10–40 hours per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design Challenging Problems — Craft advanced environmental engineering scenarios spanning contaminant transport, mass balance in treatment systems, hydrology, air dispersion modeling, and Life Cycle Assessments (LCA).
  • Author Gold-Standard Solutions — Develop rigorous, step-by-step technical solutions — including chemical dosage calculations, hydraulic flow models, and pollutant dispersion analyses — that serve as benchmark responses for AI evaluation.
  • Audit AI Outputs — Review AI-generated remediation plans, environmental impact statements, and engineering calculations for technical accuracy, regulatory compliance (EPA, ISO 14001), and safety.
  • Sharpen AI Reasoning — Identify flaws in model logic — such as incorrect stoichiometry, faulty unit conversions, or failure to account for secondary environmental impacts — and deliver structured feedback to improve how the model thinks.
  • Work Across Core Domains — Apply expertise in water and wastewater treatment, air quality management, EHS compliance, and solid or hazardous waste management.

Key Skills:

  • Advanced Degree — Master's (pursuing or completed) or PhD in Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering with an environmental focus, or a closely related discipline.
  • Domain Expert — Strong foundational knowledge in at least one core area: aquatic chemistry, wastewater process design, air quality engineering, or hazardous waste remediation.
  • Precise Communicator — Able to explain complex ecological and engineering concepts clearly and concisely in writing.
  • Detail-Oriented — High accuracy when checking unit conversions (e.g., mg/L to ppm), chemical equations, mass balances, and regulatory logic.
  • No prior AI experience required — we'll get you up to speed.
  • Prior experience with data annotation, data quality, or AI evaluation workflows is a nice to have.
  • Familiarity with environmental modeling software (e.g., AERMOD, SWMM, GoldSim) is a nice to have.
  • Experience writing technical reports or environmental impact assessments is a nice to have.
