Summary: The Database Architect / Migration DBA role involves planning, preparing, and executing database migrations for SQL Server and Oracle databases, primarily focusing on transitioning to Azure or co-location datacentres. The position requires ensuring data integrity and operational readiness during migrations while also building necessary database server infrastructure. The role is remote with some office time in Edinburgh and is classified as outside of IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, prepare, and execute database migrations supporting the application migration programme.
- Assist in defining and building database server infrastructure within Azure landing zones or co-lo platforms.
- Ensure safe migration of databases while maintaining data integrity and configuring hosting environments correctly.
Key Skills:
- Strong experience as a SQL Server DBA and/or Oracle DBA in enterprise environments.
- Hands-on experience with migration tools and techniques for SQL Server and Oracle.
- Skilled in backup and recovery operations, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Knowledge of building and administering SQL Server or Oracle on Azure VMs or co-lo platforms.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals relevant to database connectivity.
- Experience supporting or migrating SQL Server and Oracle databases, including those underpinning .NET, web, or client-server applications.
- Ability to diagnose complex database issues during high-pressure migration events.
- Comfortable working within structured change control processes.

The Role
- responsible for planning, preparing and executing database migrations that support the wider application migration programme. The role covers both SQL Server and Oracle databases hosted on-premises and migrating into Azure or a co-location datacentre. The DBA will also assist in defining and building the required database server infrastructure within the Azure landing zones or co-lo platforms to ensure compatibility, performance and operational readiness.
- This role ensures that all databases are migrated safely, data integrity is maintained and hosting environments are correctly configured for each application workload.
Required Skills:
- Strong experience as a SQL Server DBA and/or Oracle DBA supporting enterprise environments
- Hands-on experience with migration tools and techniques for both SQL Server and Oracle
- Skilled in backup and recovery operations, performance tuning and troubleshooting
- Knowledge of building and administering SQL Server or Oracle on Azure VMs or co-lo platforms
- Understanding of networking fundamentals relevant to database connectivity
- Experience supporting or migrating:
- SQL Server databases
- Oracle databases
- Databases underpinning .NET, web or client-server applications
- Ability to diagnose complex database issues during high-pressure migration events
- Comfortable working within structured change control processes
Preferred Skills
- Experience with Azure SQL or SQL Managed Instance
