Summary: The Database Administrator (DBA) role focuses on managing SQL Server databases hosted on a Windows VM in AWS LightSail. The position involves ensuring database availability, security, and performance while implementing backup and recovery solutions. The DBA will also collaborate with the development team to support database needs and automate maintenance tasks. This is a part-time or contract position with a remote working arrangement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a reliable backup and recovery solution for a database running on a Windows VM (AWS LightSail).
  • Ensure database availability, security, and performance.
  • Manage, optimize, and maintain SQL Server databases on Windows.
  • Develop and optimize queries using T-SQL.
  • Monitor database health and troubleshoot performance and connectivity issues.
  • Automate backup processes using Windows Task Scheduler, PowerShell, or other scripting tools.
  • Configure and maintain SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) for database administration.
  • Ensure proper disaster recovery planning and test restore procedures.
  • Provide ongoing database maintenance, tuning, and optimization.
  • Work closely with the development team to support database needs.

Key Skills:

  • Experience as a Database Administrator (DBA) managing SQL Server databases.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL, T-SQL, and query optimization.
  • Experience with SQL Server backups, recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Familiarity with AWS LightSail and managing Windows-based cloud VMs.
  • Experience with Windows Server administration (security, user access, services, and updates).
  • Ability to automate backups and tasks using PowerShell or batch scripting.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for SQL Server performance and Windows VM issues.
  • Knowledge of networking and firewall configurations relevant to AWS-hosted Windows VMs.
  • Experience with SQL Server Agent for automating maintenance tasks.
  • Familiarity with cloud storage solutions (e.g., AWS S3) for offsite backups.
  • Understanding of Windows Event Logs and performance monitoring tools.
  • Exposure to AWS security best practices (IAM roles, security groups, encryption).
