Summary: The role of Content Designer focuses on creating user-centered content for digital services within the UK public sector, adhering to GDS standards. The position requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to ensure content is clear, accessible, and meets user needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in public sector content design and experience with GDS-aligned services. This is a remote position based in the UK, classified as outside IR35.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver user-centred content for digital services across the public sector
- Apply GDS content principles, the Service Standard and content patterns consistently
- Work closely with user researchers, interaction designers, developers and policy teams
- Turn complex legislation, policy and processes into clear, accessible content
- Use research, data and analytics to iterate and improve content
- Create and maintain content models, taxonomies and style guidance
- Support service assessments and contribute to continuous improvement
Key Skills:
- Proven experience as a Content Designer in the public sector
- Strong knowledge of GDS standards, the Service Manual and GOV.UK style guidance
- Experience working on services at Alpha, beta and live
- Excellent writing and editing skills, with a focus on plain English and accessibility
- Confidence working with stakeholders and challenging content constructively
- Understanding of WCAG accessibility requirements and inclusive design

About the role
We're looking for an experienced Content Designer with a strong background in the UK public sector and GDS-aligned services to help design clear, accessible, user-centred content for complex services.
You'll work as part of a multidisciplinary team, shaping content from discovery through to live, ensuring it meets user needs, business goals and Government Digital Service (GDS) standards.
