Summary: The Business Analyst for the Commercial Underwriting Process will collaborate with underwriting teams to enhance and document underwriting processes in the insurance industry. This role involves eliciting requirements, developing Business Requirements Documents (BRDs), and ensuring alignment between underwriting and IT teams. The position is contract-based and allows for remote work, specifically targeting candidates based on the East Coast of the USA. A minimum of 8 years of experience in a relevant field is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner closely with Commercial Underwriters and underwriting leadership to understand current-state and future-state underwriting processes.
- Lead requirements elicitation activities including interviews, workshops, and working sessions with underwriting stakeholders.
- Develop clear, comprehensive, and high-quality Business Requirements Documents (BRDs).
- Translate underwriting workflows and risk assessment needs into structured, unambiguous requirements.
- Maintain end-to-end requirements traceability from business need through design, development, testing, and UAT.
- Act as the primary liaison between underwriting teams and IT/delivery teams.
- Support solution design reviews and validate that proposed solutions meet documented underwriting requirements.
- Participate in UAT planning and execution, validating solutions against underwriting expectations.
- Identify process gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for workflow optimization and automation.
- Manage requirement changes, assess downstream impacts, and communicate updates clearly to all stakeholders.
Key Skills:
- Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, preferably within insurance or financial services.
- Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience supporting Commercial Underwriting teams.
- Proven experience authoring detailed Business Requirements Documents (BRDs).
- Strong understanding of Commercial Lines underwriting.

Lead requirements elicitation activities including interviews, workshops, and working sessions with underwriting stakeholders.
Develop clear, comprehensive, and high-quality Business Requirements Documents (BRDs), covering:
Business objectives, scope, and assumptions
Functional and non-functional requirements
Data requirements, business rules, and underwriting decision logic
Regulatory and compliance considerations
Translate underwriting workflows and risk assessment needs into structured, unambiguous requirements for technology, product, and delivery teams.
Maintain end-to-end requirements traceability from business need through design, development, testing, and UAT.
Act as the primary liaison between underwriting teams and IT/delivery teams to ensure alignment throughout the delivery lifecycle.
Support solution design reviews and validate that proposed solutions meet documented underwriting requirements.
Participate in UAT planning and execution, validating solutions against underwriting expectations.
Identify process gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for workflow optimization and automation within underwriting operations.

Basic Qualifications

Minimum 5+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, preferably within insurance or financial services.
Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience supporting Commercial Underwriting teams.
Proven experience authoring detailed Business Requirements Documents (BRDs) for complex underwriting or system transformation initiatives.
Strong understanding of Commercial Lines underwriting, including:
Risk assessment and appetite
Rating and pricing concepts
Underwriting rules and decision frameworks
Experience working on underwriting system implementations or modernization programs.
Strong ability to translate underwriting language into structured technical and functional requirements.
Excellent written, verbal, and stakeholder facilitation skills.
Ability to work independently and directly with underwriting stakeholders.
Travel
Minimal to moderate travel may be required based on project needs.
Degree
Bachelor's degree in business, Finance, Information Systems, or equivalent professional experience.
Nice to Have

Experience working with underwriting platforms or PAS solutions such as Federato, Duck Creek, or similar systems.
Experience working in Agile and/or Waterfall delivery environments.
Business Analysis certifications such as CBAP, CCBA, or equivalent.
