Backup Specialist - Avamar Dell EMC

Summary: The Avamar Dell EMC Backup Specialist role is a mid-level position focused on administering, monitoring, and supporting Dell EMC's Avamar data protection and backup systems within an enterprise IT environment. The specialist will ensure data integrity, manage disaster recovery processes, and troubleshoot backup and restore operations while collaborating with the IT infrastructure team. Key Responsibilities:

• Administer backup and replication jobs using Avamar's deduplication features.
• Manage backup schedules, retention policies, and datasets.
• Perform and verify successful completion of scheduled and ad-hoc backups and restores.
• Support data and system restores for both Windows and Linux clients.
• Develop and refine disaster recovery plans, and participate in testing and audits.
• Monitor the health of the backup environment, responding quickly to alerts and failures.
• Troubleshoot and resolve backup failures and performance issues; escalate as needed.
• Coordinate with application teams (SQL, Oracle, VMware, etc.) to ensure proper backup configuration.
• Maintain documentation and operational runbooks.
• Administer Avamar servers, manage client agents, and oversee upgrades as needed.
• Ensure compliance with change management and security policies.
• Generate reporting as required (e.g., with Dell EMC DPA).

Key Skills:

• 3-7 years of Avamar backup administration experience in medium to large environments.
• Proficiency in enterprise backup concepts and disaster recovery.
• Familiarity with Data Domain integration, tape libraries, and major applications.
• Windows and Linux system administration experience.
• Working knowledge of storage protocols (SAN/NAS) preferred.
• Experience with issue troubleshooting, performance tuning, and ticketing tools.
• Strong documentation and communication skills.
