Role : Azure Platform Engineer
Day Rate : £450 - £500
Duration : Initial 6 months
IR35 : Outside IR35
Location : Fully remote (UK-based)
We are working with a growing technology consultancy that is supporting a well-known UK brand on a significant platform reengineering programme. As part of this engagement, they are looking to bring in a strong Azure platform engineer to help deliver a large-scale replatforming initiative across a complex and historically fragmented estate. This is a hands-on role focused on building, standardising and scaling a modern Azure platform, while helping to move away from years of manual configuration and bespoke implementations.
The Role
You will be joining an environment that currently supports a large customer base across a mix of hosting approaches, including Azure VMs, IIS, SQL Server, Azure App Services and Azure SQL, alongside some on premises and bespoke customer setups. The current platform has evolved organically and includes:
- Multiple approaches to hosting the same application suite
- Limited Infrastructure as Code adoption
- A high degree of manual configuration and maintenance
- Bespoke, customer-specific implementations that create complexity and slow down progress
A new hosting platform has been introduced using pre-built images and Terraform-based Infrastructure as Code, which has proven successful at MVP stage. The focus now is to expand, mature and scale this platform across the wider estate.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and build a scalable, standardised Azure hosting platform
- Extend Infrastructure as Code coverage across the platform, particularly around databases and related services
- Support the migration of existing customers onto the new platform
- Consolidate environments, including migration from multiple Azure tenants into a unified structure
- Replace manually configured services and processes with automated, repeatable pipelines
- Design and implement solutions to remove legacy, bespoke integrations that are currently blocking progress
- Integrate additional engineering and operational processes into the platform, including: Data migrations & Deployment of customisations such as stored procedures and reporting
- Build out monitoring, operational tooling and self-service capabilities to support both engineering teams and customers
What We’re Looking For
We are looking for an engineer who is comfortable operating in complex environments and can bring structure, consistency and modern platform thinking. Key experience includes:
- Strong experience with Azure platform engineering
- Proven experience designing and building cloud hosting platforms at scale
- Strong hands-on experience with Terraform and Infrastructure as Code
- Experience working with Azure VMs, App Services, Azure SQL and SQL Server
- Experience improving environments that have grown organically with manual processes and bespoke configurations
- A practical mindset, able to deliver improvements incrementally while maintaining service stability
Desirable experience:
- Experience with Packer or image-based infrastructure approaches
- Experience with database platform engineering, including services such as SSRS and SSIS
- Experience migrating and consolidating multi-tenant or multi-environment architectures
- Experience introducing automation across networking, security or edge services such as Cloudflare
What Success Looks Like
- A consistent, standardised Azure platform replacing fragmented legacy setups
- Significant reduction in manual configuration and operational overhead
- Increased use of Infrastructure as Code across all layers of the platform
- Successful onboarding and migration of customers onto the new hosting model
- Improved reliability, scalability and ease of deployment across the estate
Why This Opportunity
This is a high-impact role within a complex replatforming programme, offering the opportunity to:
- Shape and scale a modern Azure platform from MVP to full adoption
- Work within a consultancy environment delivering into a well-known UK brand
- Solve real platform engineering challenges across infrastructure, automation and migration
- Operate fully remote on a strong day rate, outside IR35
