Summary: The Assistant Payroll Manager will oversee day-to-day payroll operations and support the Head of Payroll in a remote capacity for an 18-month fixed-term contract. This role requires strong leadership skills and a commitment to accuracy in managing payroll processes for the organization. The successful candidate will also coach a team of Payroll and Benefits Administrators while ensuring compliance with payroll regulations. The position is ideal for an experienced payroll professional looking to advance their career in a dynamic environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support and deputise for the Head of Payroll
  • Manage and coach a team of Payroll and Benefits Administrators
  • Oversee and verify the input of all payroll-related data
  • Perform pre- and post-pay run checks in line with audit requirements
  • Reconcile BACS, PAYE, pensions, and childcare vouchers
  • Ensure compliance with National Minimum and Living Wage requirements
  • Submit BACS payments and respond to General Managers' queries
  • Handle external requests for payroll information
  • Assist in salary reviews, year-end processing, and payroll system testing
  • Produce and submit P11Ds and handle associated queries
  • Lead annual appraisals and performance development of the team

Key Skills:

  • Strong background in payroll with demonstrable experience in a leadership or assistant management role
  • Experience using Workday is essential
  • Proven ability to manage a busy payroll department and support staff development
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills
  • Confident using payroll systems and Microsoft Office (particularly Excel)
  • Able to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision
