Summary: The Assistant Director - Legal & Democratic Services will oversee legal, democratic, and information governance services within a public sector client in Northamptonshire. This role requires a qualified solicitor with monitoring officer experience and a strong understanding of local government law. The position involves leadership responsibilities, strategic development, and ensuring compliance with governance frameworks. The role is initially a 3-month contract with remote work, requiring attendance at council meetings every two months.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake statutory responsibilities as Deputy Monitoring Officer.
  • Support the Director of Governance and HR in governance and ethical framework development.
  • Lead and manage the Council's in-house legal, democratic, and information governance services.
  • Develop and implement strategies and policies aligned with corporate priorities.
  • Embed a performance culture focused on continual improvement and customer needs.
  • Manage resources efficiently to deliver effective services.
  • Proactively manage risks and business continuity planning.
  • Oversee contract management of legal services provided through Pathfinder Ltd.
  • Develop and maintain key internal and external relationships.
  • Review and modernize functions to reflect best practices.
  • Support and deputize for the Director of Governance and Human Resources.

Key Skills:

  • Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a full practising certificate.
  • Extensive continuous professional development evidence.
  • Advanced knowledge of constitutional and democratic processes.
  • Experience as a Deputy Monitoring Officer.
  • Understanding of local government law and judicial review.
