Summary: The role of Applied Physicist focuses on leveraging deep expertise in physics to enhance AI's understanding of the physical world. Candidates will stress-test AI models, identify reasoning failures, and contribute to building systems that adhere to fundamental physical laws. This position is fully remote and offers flexible hours, requiring a PhD-level understanding of physics without prior AI experience. The role emphasizes independent work and the ability to design complex physics problems and provide expert feedback on AI-generated outputs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at PhD qualifying exam level requiring multi-step logical reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation.
- Author detailed "golden response" solutions with flawless step-by-step workings, correct physical constants, and precise unit handling.
- Audit AI-generated simulations, proofs, and explanations for physical consistency, identifying where models hallucinate physics that violates first principles.
- Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI reasoning around conservation laws, boundary conditions, and fundamental physical constraints.
- Work independently and asynchronously on your own schedule.
Key Skills:
- PhD (completed or near completion) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field.
- Deep mastery of core physics disciplines: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics.
- Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured prose.
- Uncompromising attention to detail regarding units, scientific notation, and logical proof structure.
- Self-motivated and consistent when working independently.
- No prior AI or data annotation experience required.
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance workflows is a plus.
- Proficiency with tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, or Python (NumPy/SciPy) is advantageous.
- Background in computational physics, experimental physics, or engineering physics is beneficial.
- Experience writing technical documentation or academic publications is a plus.
