Summary: The role of Applied Physicist focuses on leveraging expertise in physics to evaluate and enhance AI's understanding of the physical world. Candidates will design complex physics problems, audit AI outputs for accuracy, and provide expert feedback to improve AI reasoning. This position is fully remote and offers flexible hours, requiring a PhD in a relevant field but no prior AI experience. The role emphasizes independent work and analytical skills in physics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at the level of PhD qualifying exams.
- Author definitive "golden" solutions with precise step-by-step workings.
- Audit AI-generated simulations, proofs, and derivations for physical consistency.
- Provide structured, expert feedback to improve AI reasoning.
- Work independently and asynchronously on a flexible schedule.
Key Skills:
- PhD (completed or in final stages) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field.
- Deep mastery of Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics.
- Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations.
- Strong attention to detail in scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and logical proof structure.
- Self-motivated and reliable when working independently.
- Experience with data annotation or scientific dataset evaluation (nice to have).
- Proficiency with computational tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, or Python (NumPy/SciPy) (nice to have).

About The Role
What if your expertise in quantum mechanics, electrodynamics, and thermodynamics could directly shape how AI understands the physical world? We're looking for PhD-level Applied Physicists to stress-test cutting-edge large language models — exposing the gaps in their physical reasoning and helping ensure that AI respects the fundamental laws of the universe. This is a fully remote, flexible contract role. No prior AI experience needed — just deep domain mastery and a rigorous, analytical mind.
Organization: Alignerr
Type: Hourly Contract
Location: Remote
Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Design advanced, open-ended physics problems at the level of PhD qualifying exams — requiring multi-step logical reasoning and rigorous mathematical derivation
- Author definitive "golden" solutions with precise step-by-step workings, correct physical constants, and flawless unit conversions
- Audit AI-generated simulations, proofs, and derivations for physical consistency — identifying where models "hallucinate" physics that violates first principles
- Provide structured, expert feedback that improves AI reasoning around boundary conditions, conservation laws, and fundamental physical constraints
- Work independently and asynchronously — fully on your own schedule
Who You Are
- Holds a PhD (completed or in final stages) in Applied Physics, Physics, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field
- Deep mastery across the core pillars of physics: Classical Mechanics, Electrodynamics, Statistical Mechanics, and Quantum Mechanics
- Exceptional ability to explain complex physical phenomena and mathematical derivations in clear, structured English
- Uncompromising eye for detail — units, scientific notation, dimensional analysis, and logical proof structure are second nature
- Self-motivated and reliable when working independently
- No prior AI or machine learning experience required
Nice to Have
- Experience with data annotation, scientific dataset evaluation, or quality assurance for research outputs
- Proficiency with computational tools such as MATLAB, COMSOL, Python (NumPy/SciPy), or similar
- Background in research, academia, or applied engineering environments
