Role Summary :
We are seeking an experienced AIX Migration Engineer to help migrate large-scale, business-critical AIX workloads from IBM Power systems into AWS using Stromasys (CHARON-Power) emulation and supporting cloud-native modernisation patterns. This is a remote-first engineering role with on-site attendance only during critical migration weekends, outage windows or key phases of system validation. You will work across discovery, remediation, automation tooling, build, and cutover execution for major legacy modernisation programmes.
Key Responsibilities :
- Migration Delivery & Execution
- Lead and execute end-to-end AIX migrations from IBM Power hardware to AWS-hosted Stromasys CHARON emulated environments or refactored/Linux-based equivalents.
- Perform on-site activities only when required for system access, validation, physical checks or cutover.
- Participate in weekend migrations, overnight cutover windows and controlled outage periods.
- Runbooks, Documentation & Change Control
- Create, maintain and own detailed migration runbooks, including pre-checks, data sync processes, cutover actions, rollback plans and verification steps.
- Produce clear documentation including configuration guides, build sheets, dependency maps and asset inventories.
- Discovery, Assessment & Remediation
- Conduct in-depth discovery and inventory analysis of AIX workloads (APV, LPARs, VIO, storage, network, middleware).
- Perform compatibility and remediation analysis to ensure workloads behave predictably under Stromasys or cloud-native equivalents.
- Identify migration blockers and propose remediation steps around OS, middleware, storage or custom integrations.
- Tooling, Automation & Testing
- Develop automation scripts, tooling and utilities to streamline repeatable migration activity.
- Support integration and testing cycles including smoke tests, performance baseline comparisons, and final Go/No-Go criteria.
- Collaboration & Delivery
- Work closely with architecture, Linux, Windows, storage, network and cloud teams to define end-to-end migration patterns.
- Ensure security, resilience and operational readiness across all migrated AIX workloads.
Experience Required :
Core AIX & Infrastructure Expertise
- Strong hands-on AIX engineering background (AIX 6.x / AIX 7.x), including LPARs, VIO, PowerVM, NIM, device/storge management and troubleshooting.
- Experience supporting large-scale AIX estates in enterprise or MSP environments.
Migration Delivery Experience (Mandatory)
- Proven track record delivering major AIX migrations in structured, high-pressure environments.
- Experience working to strict runbooks and operating within weekend/outage delivery windows.
Cloud & Emulation Experience
- Experience migrating workloads into AWS, including compute, storage, networking and security components.
- Knowledge of Stromasys CHARON-Power or similar Power emulation technology (highly desirable).
- Understanding of AIX behaviour under emulation and cloud-native equivalents.
Tooling & Automation
- Strong scripting and automation experience (KSH/Bash, Python, Perl or equivalent).
- Ability to build migration tooling, wrappers and validation scripts.
General Delivery Skills
- Excellent documentation, runbook creation and structured change execution.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities under pressure.
- Effective communicator across cross-functional technical teams.
Desirable / Nice-to-Have :
- Experience with Oracle DB on AIX, WebSphere, MQ, TSM or other heritage middleware stacks.
- Understanding of hybrid cloud networking (VPN, Direct Connect, routing models).
- Familiarity with Linux platforms for refactor or target-state alternatives.
Salary Banding £450–£550 per day / £65,000–£80,000 perm FTC
