Summary: The role of Registered Building Inspector - Class 3 involves managing and evaluating building control caseloads for high-risk residential buildings (HRBs) across the UK. The position is part of the newly established Building Safety Regulator (BSR), which aims to enhance building safety and accountability following past tragedies. Inspectors will conduct onsite inspections, provide technical guidance, and ensure compliance with building regulations. This is a talent pool opportunity for future roles, with a duration of 6-12 months and classified as inside IR35.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage, evaluate and discharge a building control caseload, including complex buildings and developments.
  • Examine plans and carry out onsite inspections, maintaining thorough records and dealing with enforcement action.
  • Act as a specialist Building Control expert, providing competent advice to BSR.
  • Assess plans, design and completed works in line with building regulations.
  • Provide guidance on building control standards.
  • Assess structural safety and risk of fire spread where appropriate.
  • Conduct unsupervised onsite inspections to confirm compliance with Building Regulations.
  • Provide technical guidance to colleagues on compliance matters.
  • Manage records of site activities and ensure data is up-to-date in the asset management system.
  • Assess plans and carry out inspections for compliance with Building Regulations and associated legislation.
  • Manage own caseload and work as part of a multi-disciplinary team on higher-risk buildings.
  • Provide technical and managerial support to Principal Regulatory leads and building control professionals.
  • Act as an expert witness in legal enforcement cases.
  • Maintain an expert understanding of the Building Safety Act 2002 and related frameworks.

Key Skills:

  • Experience and specialist knowledge of a range of building types including non-standard buildings and HRBs.
  • Demonstrable experience of building control processes for various building types.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation for complex buildings and HRBs.
  • Knowledge of approved documents, best practices, and guidance for building types.
  • Experience in Fire Safety, Structural Safety, Construction Safety, and health & safety.
  • Experience assessing compliance against the Building Act 1984 and Building Regulations 2010.
  • Experience in site inspections, plans assessments, and developing inspection schedules.
  • Experience in assessing safety and risk and securing compliance, including enforcement action.
