Reactive Maintenance Engineer - Highway Drainage

Join our city-wide initiative aimed at tackling long-standing access issues that hinder essential highway maintenance, drainage cleansing, and street cleansing activities. As a Reactive Maintenance Engineer, you will play a crucial role in developing practical solutions that facilitate vital maintenance work, thereby reducing flooding risks, enhancing neighbourhood cleanliness, and improving the overall highway environment in Manchester.

Day-to-Day of the Role:

  • Engage with local residents to build support for planned maintenance activities.
  • Coordinate operational teams, arrange temporary access measures, and oversee site activities across the city.
  • Develop and manage programmes of work to address access issues through coordinated stakeholder engagement and project delivery.
  • Work directly with community groups, elected Members, and other stakeholders to implement temporary parking restrictions and maintenance activities.
  • Liaise with contractors to schedule and execute cleansing and maintenance activities efficiently.
  • Arrange necessary traffic management, temporary parking restrictions, and operational requirements to facilitate access.
  • Lead communication and engagement activities to keep residents and businesses well-informed of planned works.
  • Monitor progress, manage risks, and resolve issues to ensure successful delivery of maintenance programmes.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • Proven ability to manage projects involving multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills, with experience working with residents, community groups, and contractors.
  • Understanding of highway maintenance, drainage operations, traffic management, and local authority service delivery.
  • Experience in planning and coordinating operational activities across different services or organisations.
  • Asset management experience using platforms such as Alloy Causeway or similar.
  • Hold an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering, MSc in a relevant discipline, or HNC/HND in highway or civil engineering.
  • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer with relevant institution membership preferred.
