  • Proven ability to design and execute manual test scripts.
  • Sound knowledge of structured testing methods (e.g., black box and regression).
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure to strict deadlines and prioritize workload.
  • Advanced use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • ISTQB/ISEB Foundation or Intermediate certification is ideal.
  • Experience designing and executing automated tests and advanced use of Azure DevOps.

Job Summary

As part of the Testing Team within the St John Ambulance DevOps function, this role is responsible for validating new software releases, enhancements, and defect fixes prior to deployment into the production environment. By designing and executing comprehensive testing aligned with industry best practice, the role mitigates the risk and organisational impact of software defects, ensuring system reliability and continuity of operations. The role requires a strong understanding of complex, end-to-end business processes across the organisation. Working closely with stakeholders at all levels, the role translates business and technical requirements into well-documented test cases and test scripts. In partnership with the Test Manager, the role contributes to the development and execution of the overall test strategy. Testing activities include the creation and execution of both manual and automated test scripts, utilising tools such as Jira and Selenium. As part of cross-functional project teams, the role leads and coordinates User Acceptance Testing (UAT) with stakeholders across St John Ambulance. The role proactively analyses and resolves testing issues, collaborating with Developers to identify root causes and support timely resolution. It is accountable for delivering high-quality testing outcomes within critical project timelines.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Educated to A level or equivalent in Computing or a related subject, with experience testing both packaged and bespoke software within Agile and/or Waterfall project teams. Proven ability to design and execute manual test scripts, with a strong understanding of business-critical applications and organisational processes. Sound knowledge of structured testing methods (e.g. black box and regression) and the ability to review requirements and derive effective test cases and scripts. Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence, manage upwards, and work effectively in complex environments. Ability to work under pressure to strict deadlines, prioritise workload, quickly grasp new technical concepts, and use Microsoft Office applications to an advanced level. Ideally you will hold ISTQB/ISEB Foundation or Intermediate certification and have experience designing and executing automated tests, and advanced use of Azure DevOps for testing activities.

About the Role

Implement quality assurance testing within project teams, working collaboratively to support the successful delivery of projects and IT services. Engage with stakeholders at all levels to understand complex business processes, identify and manage risks, and develop coordinated test plans and mitigations. Design, build, and maintain reusable manual and automated test scripts and test case suites to ensure effective and consistent testing coverage. Identify, log, categorise, and prioritise software defects, working with internal and third-party development teams to assess quality, resolve issues, and drive continuous improvement. Contribute to root cause analysis and problem-solving activities, suggesting practical solutions to testing and quality issues throughout the project lifecycle. Actively participate in project ceremonies and knowledge-sharing activities, proactively identifying opportunities to improve software testing practices across St John Ambulance.
