Summary: The Quality Engineer (QA) role at the UK Astronomy Technology Centre in Edinburgh involves ensuring that space flight hardware and associated documentation meet quality standards. The position requires implementing quality control processes, conducting inspections, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to support process improvements. The role is fixed-term for two years and offers a flexible working environment within a leading-edge scientific instrumentation facility. Candidates will work alongside top scientists and engineers on significant projects in the field of astronomy.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement quality control processes and procedures focused on Assembly, Integration, and Test of flight hardware.
  • Conduct thorough quality inspections on incoming and outgoing hardware.
  • Ensure adherence to processes and applicable standards, including ECSS requirements.
  • Create and format documentation, manage archives, and ensure accurate Metadata entry.
  • Manage Change Request processes and Configuration Item Data List (CIDL).
  • Review document submissions and manage drawing documentation.
  • Handle non-conformance management and ensure process adherence to quality standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support process improvements.

Key Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in a STEM subject or equivalent professional development.
  • Understanding of manufacturing drawings, specifications, and engineering standards (ideally ECSS or ISO).
  • Knowledge and experience of quality management and control methods within a formal quality management system.
  • Experience in configuration management and/or change management within a structured engineering system.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to oversee the work of others.
  • Experience in creating technical work and reviewing documentation for conformance.
  • Familiarity with continuous improvement methods and activities.
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
