Summary: The Protection & Control Systems Engineer role involves leading and advising on Protection & Control content for projects within the Transmission & Distribution sector. The position requires expertise in design, compliance with standards, and technical documentation, alongside site visits and stakeholder collaboration. The engineer will also provide support for project management and sales activities, ensuring effective delivery within time and budget constraints. This is a contractor position based in Staffordshire or Glasgow with hybrid working arrangements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Technically lead and advise on project Protection & Control content ensuring compliance with relevant standards.
- Lead design activities, including chairing workshops and review meetings with stakeholders.
- Develop SLD, KLDs, System Architecture, and Concept Level Designs to meet project/client requirements.
- Undertake site visits and non-intrusive surveys to support design and implementation.
- Produce and review technical documentation such as Functional Design Specs and Compliance Documents.
- Produce and review Protection & Control designs including schematics and supporting calculations.
- Contribute to client approval qualifications ensuring compliance with specifications.
- Deliver projects effectively within time, quality, and budget constraints.
- Provide technical support for sales and tendering of projects.
- Support project management in identifying changes and managing risks.
Key Skills:
- Good understanding of UK Transmission and Distribution Systems.
- Experience in Protection & Control Technology with key vendors.
- Working knowledge of IEC61850 and its implementation.
- Knowledge of communications systems and substation protocols.
- Understanding of Cyber Security implications for design in Protection and Control solutions.
- Structured and analytical working style.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Job Description: As an experienced Protection & Control Systems Engineer, it is expected you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of Protection & Control Systems, the Transmission & Distribution sector, applicable standards and technologies required.
Responsibilities
- Technically lead and advise for the project Protection & Control content ensuring compliance to relevant standards.
- Lead the design including chairing design workshops, review meetings and working with the stakeholders to ensure a compliant system is provided meeting client and regulatory standards.
- Develop SLD, KLD’s, System Architecture and Concept Level Designs to support solution development and ensure that project / client requirements are fulfilled, including the identification of the most suitable technology for the application.
- Undertake site visits / non-intrusive surveys as required to support the tendering and project teams in technical matters, as part of the design activities or as part of site implementation support.
- Produce and review technical documentation to support the design, development and delivery of systems such as Functional Design Spec, Design Intent Documents and Compliance Documents etc.
- Produce and review Protection & Control designs including schematics drawings, general arrangements, layouts, supporting calculations and schedules.
- Contribute to the client approval qualification of solutions, helping to ensure compliance to client specifications/requirements.
- Be responsible for the effective delivery to time, quality and budget.
- Provide technical support, input and feedback for sales and tendering of projects.
- Support the Project Manager in identification of change, programme, cost etc
- Support others in the project team to ensure risks are proactively identified, assessed and managed to avoid adverse impacts on the project.
Requirements:
- Have a good understanding and keen interest in the UK Transmission and Distribution Systems.
- Have experience in Protection & Control Technology across one or more of the key vendors.
- Have a working knowledge of IEC61850 and how to implement this within the field.
- Have knowledge of communications systems, substation protocols along with an understanding of Cyber Security and the implications/ requirements for design in Protection and Control solutions
- Structured and analytical way of working.
- Ability to work independently/Lead/work as part of a team.
- Ability to work well under pressure and to deadlines and to motivate others to achieve the same.
- Have excellent communication skills.
- Be flexible in methods of working to achieve best outcomes.
- Successfully completed technical degree (Bachelor, Master, Diploma) or a comparable qualification or relevant experience.
