Venesky-Brown are currently recruiting for a Project Manager – Nuclear Island to join the Sizewell C project team in Suffolk. This role is a day rate contract and can be based from either the Bristol or London offices.

Following on from the success of Hinkley Point C (HPC), the SZC Project is a nuclear new build project in Suffolk, which has obtained planning approval and Government financing support. The project has started construction and is now seeking private investment. When completed, it will provide dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, which along with renewables, will support Britain to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

Job Purpose / Overview: The Sizewell C Project requires Project Managers to drive the delivery of engineering work by the Responsible Designer (RD) and the engineering, procurement and manufacturing of key contracts. The first objective of the role is to sufficiently advance the engineering and secure the supply chain to de-risk the SZC Final Investment Decision (FID), through the maximum possible replication of the HPC detailed design. Each Project Manager will work closely with especially the SZC supply chain team, the Responsible Designer (RD), the SZC quality team and the suppliers to prepare for and execute the delivery phase of the project. Our Project Managers will focus on one of the following areas: MEH : primarily the development and setup of the MEH delivery model and alliance for SZC.A joint team has been established and they will continue to develop and detail the MEH delivery model and alliance, and work in accordance with lessons learned from the HPC programme Nuclear Island (NI): each project manager will be dedicated to a group of system(s), building(s) & contracts within the NI programme with a value of up to £100m. Civil Works: the Project Manager role will support the development of the strategy for delivering scope up to the value of £50m to cost, schedule and quality. This post also has the responsibility to ensure delivery of all (or part of) the engineering, procurement, manufacturing, construction and commissioning activities in accordance with the overall Project schedule CI/BOP: to oversee all activities associated with the delivery of engineering contracts up to the value of £100m and securing resources which meet business and technical requirements, ensuring they’re delivered safely, on time and within budget

Principal Accountabilities: The role holder will:

  • Take a global overview of the nuclear power plant Systems, Structures and Components (SSCs) within their programme, with a view to maximise replication from HPC and prepare for key contracts to be awarded
  • Be responsible for the timely delivery of engineering studies by the RD or by key contractors and for ensuring they meet the needs of the SZC project
  • Prepare with the multidisciplinary team specific post-FID contracts (terms & conditions, contractual appendices and technical specification)
  • Drive the implementation of SZC site-specific design changes into the design deliverables in their programme, including contract specifications to enable robust pricing
  • Manage internal interfaces (between contracts and systems) and external interfaces (between programme scopes) to ensure a coordinated approach to design and delivery
  • Manage early engagement with stakeholders (including equipment suppliers) to identify obsolescence issues and other risks to replication
  • Manage the technical elements of the procurement process for specific contracts
  • Ensure that lessons-learnt and knowledge-capture are practiced as business as usual
  • Develop and implement strategies and plans in line with the overall programme execution plan (PEP)
  • Define the work scope to be delivered within the contract or package of work and the interfaces to the other elements of the programme
  • Drive the delivery of the contract or package activities to ensure they are delivered safely, on time, to budget, meeting business & technical requirements
  • Ensure that contract or package contractual requirements are fulfilled
  • Overseeing the nuclear power plant systems, structures and components in the Conventional Island and Balance of Plant programme
  • Working with multidisciplinary teams to prepare manufacturing and construction contracts
  • Driving the implementation of SZC site-specific design changes

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

Essential :

  • Demonstrate success coordinating multi-disciplinary design/procurement work and driving design/procurement teams to deliver on time
  • Project management or project engineering experience, from concept to handover
  • Background in mechanical, electrical, process, systems or civil engineering for large industrial plants
  • Good understanding of the complexity of major projects, including interface management between scope areas
  • Experience of the pre-tender and tender stages of procuring contracts for the design, manufacturing and/or installation of industrial equipment
  • Excellent communication skills in client-facing and contractor-facing situations
  • Manage engineers, consultants and other advisors throughout large and complex projects
  • Demonstrate specific success in managing / developing: Engineering design, contract and field execution strategies for project delivery, Multi-discipline EPCM projects, Procurement and management of complex contracts, Control of costs; risk; schedule and change and proficient in the use of Earned Value tools, Close out of commercial claims and the associated negotiations.

Desirable:

  • Previous engineering or project management experience in the nuclear industry.
