Summary: The role of Principal Mechanical Engineer involves leading mechanical design efforts within a consultancy focused on the water and utilities sectors. The role is based in Stretford, Manchester, and is structured as a 12-month contract with potential for extension. Key Responsibilities:

  • Produce high-quality design deliverables that meet safety and quality standards.
  • Undertake detailed mechanical design calculations and drawings for water industry applications.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to CAD technicians, junior engineers, and graduates.
  • Oversee and review work from subcontracted M&E design teams.
  • Coordinate with equipment suppliers and manufacturers for system integration.
  • Prepare and review design investigations, technical reports, and specifications.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant technical standards and project requirements.
  • Accurately estimate design hours and support planning/scheduling activities.
  • Represent the business in meetings and deliver design presentations when required.

Key Skills:

  • Minimum of 10 years' relevant mechanical design experience, ideally within the water sector.
  • Strong background in hydraulic design.
  • Familiarity with electrical design principles and control systems.
  • Degree-qualified or HND in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Proficient in standard IT tools and engineering software.
  • Member of a recognised professional engineering institution, actively working toward chartership.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) is advantageous.
  • Multi-disciplinary knowledge, including electrical and/or control engineering.
  • Experience with both clean water and wastewater projects.
  • Understanding of construction methods, materials, and practical site constraints.
  • Solid understanding of engineering drawing standards and best practice.
