Summary: The Principal Health and Safety Consultant will provide professional support on health and safety matters to employees and non-employees within a public sector context. This role involves collaborating with the Head of Natural and Marine Environment to enhance safety management systems and ensure compliance with statutory obligations across Parks and Harbour services. The consultant will also be responsible for auditing current processes and developing a forward health and safety management system. This position is initially contracted for six months and requires strong stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support the appointment of a Senior Health & Safety Consultant for service areas, ensuring quality assurance and compliance activities.
  • Audit and stress test current processes and documentation, devising and delivering a program of work with specific tasks.
  • Prepare a forward health and safety management system based on HSG65, including resource allocation for compliance tasks.
  • Engage with senior stakeholders and translate relevant policy into effective working arrangements.
  • Build effective working relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  • Work independently and collaboratively, demonstrating strong decision-making skills in a complex service environment.
  • Manage health and safety projects from start to finish, focusing on outcome-based results.

Key Skills:

  • Prior experience in health and safety consultancy, particularly in public sector environments.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand and translate policy into practical applications.
  • Experience in managing compliance tasks and quality assurance processes.
  • Motivated and able to work independently as well as collaboratively.
  • Strong decision-making abilities and experience in project management.
