Summary: The Principal Design Engineer role at Rubicon Consulting involves leading a skilled team on various transmission substation projects, focusing on project and tender engineering. Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage engineering activities for transmission substation projects from early engagement to As-Built stage.
- Serve as the technical lead for large EHV/HV Air & Gas Insulated Substation projects in the UK.
- Supervise and coordinate engineering teams, internal and external partners, and sub-suppliers.
- Provide information for civil designs and coordinate interfaces between various engineering disciplines.
- Participate in technical discussions with customers and suppliers, addressing site queries and documentation.
- Manage engineering budget, schedule, forecast, risk, and change management activities.
- Handle technical claims and support project management and contracting teams.
Key Skills:
- Bachelor or master’s in electrical engineering or equivalent.
- Proven experience in transmission substation engineering, focusing on detailed design and site support.
- Knowledge of SSEN & SPEN requirements and standards.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it.
- Proactive team player with excellent communication skills.
- Expert knowledge in substation design, layouts, primary design, grounding, and lightning design.
- Knowledge of system studies, secondary engineering, and protection/control systems.
- Experience in installation and commissioning is a plus.
- Strong in MS Office; knowledge of MicroStation and AutoCAD is required.
- Fluency in English, both written and spoken.
- Willingness to travel 25% of the time for domestic/international travel.

Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for Principal Design Engineer on a 6 Month Contract, based in Glasgow.
Role Summary
Principal Design Engineer will lead and work in a skilled team on a wide range of transmission substation projects. The position will focus on the project and tender engineering and its interfaces and scope of work involved in HV - substation design to meet customer needs, legislative demands and standards.
Overall responsible for managing & leading all engineering activities from early project engagement through to the As-Built stage with strict adherence to Project Specifications & standards including QA/QC, HSSE & Integrity.
Technical lead of large and complex EHV/HV Air & Gas Insulated Substation (AIS & GIS) projects in UK.
Supervise, coordinate & provide guidance to engineering teams within the company (local & remote), internal & external partners, sub-suppliers, secondary engineers & civil engineers.
Provide information for civil designs and coordination of interfaces between construction planning, steel structure engineering, protection and control system, auxiliary power system and all equipment suppliers for the project.
Participate and lead in technical discussions with customers and suppliers, handle site queries and take necessary actions up to as-built documentation
Engineering budget, schedule, forecast, risk & change management activities.
Technical claim management & supporting PM/Contracting/Operation management team.
Requirements
Bachelor or master’s in electrical engineering or equivalent
Proven experience in transmission substation engineering, with focus on detailed design, tender process and site support.
Knowledge of required SSEN & SPEN requirements and standards.
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards it
Result orientated team player with a proactive approach.
Excellent in communication, to interact with external and internal parties at all levels in a multi-cultural environment.
Expert knowledge in Substation design and engineering, Layouts, Primary design & calculations, Grounding & Lightning design, Steel design inputs, transformers, HV & MV Switchgear systems,
Knowledge of system studies like load flow, short circuit calculation; Single Line Diagrams, CT/VT calculations, Auxiliary Power Systems, power cables.
Knowledge of secondary engineering, protection and control system.
Experience in Installation & Commissioning is a plus.
Strong in MS Office, knowledge in MicroStation and AutoCAD is required.
Fluency in English – both written and spoken
Availability to travel 25 % of the time (domestic/international travel)
working in an office and on a construction site
