Role Overview
Role: Principal Substation Primary (HV Plant) Design Engineer
Location: Glasgow (Office/Hybrid options also available in Leeds, Birmingham, or Epsom)
Duration: 12 Months
Rate: Up to £90- £95/hr (Inside IR35 / Umbrella)
Clearance: Must hold or be eligible for BPSS security clearance
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Lead FEED and detailed design workstreams for high-voltage (HV) transmission substation projects, ensuring full compliance and technical integrity.
- Team Leadership & Mentorship: Line manage, mentor, and support the career development of junior and mid-level engineers.
- Design & Quality Assurance: Review and assure HV plant layouts, earthing designs, interlocking schemes, busbar calculations, and technical specifications.
- Tender & Bid Management: Act as tender manager for HV plant packages, reviewing technical offers to deliver competitive, compliant submissions.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Chair design and hazard review meetings, coordinate across multi-disciplinary teams, and attend site visits, FAT, and SAT as required.
Key Requirements
- Qualifications: Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent experience); Chartered Engineer status (or actively working towards it).
- HV Expertise: Proven track record in primary plant design for substations (UK grid standards knowledge strongly preferred).
- Leadership: Demonstrated experience managing engineering teams, resourcing, and technical quality control.
- Standards: Strong working knowledge of electrical codes and standards (IEC, IEEE, National Grid standards).
- Clearance: Active BPSS clearance
