Summary: The Principal Civil Design Engineer role involves leading the design and delivery of complex water-related infrastructure projects within a leading engineering consultancy. The position requires extensive experience in civil and structural engineering, particularly in the water sector, and includes responsibilities such as project management, technical mentorship, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. The role emphasizes sustainable solutions and high standards of technical excellence. Candidates should be degree-qualified and actively pursuing chartered membership in relevant engineering institutions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the civil design of water sector projects, including waste water treatment plants, sewage networks, and clean water networks.
- Prepare detailed design calculations, drawings, and specifications, ensuring compliance with relevant codes of practice and industry standards.
- Manage and oversee the successful delivery of projects from initial design through to construction and commissioning.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure an integrated approach to project delivery.
- Conduct site inspections and surveys to ensure design accuracy and compliance.
- Maintain close communication with clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers, fostering a collaborative learning environment.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources, ensuring on-time and within-budget project delivery.
- Address complex engineering problems and propose practical, cost-effective solutions.
- Stay up to date with relevant design codes, standards, and innovations within the water sector.
- Ensure that health, safety, and environmental standards are adhered to at all stages of the project.
Key Skills:
- Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or a related field.
- Previous experience in civil/structural design, particularly within the water sector.
- Actively working towards chartered membership of ICE or IStructE.
- Strong technical ability in civil/structural design and reinforced concrete design.
- Practical experience in site-based activities, such as site inspections and surveys.
- Strong understanding of commercial aspects of engineering projects.
- Experience managing design changes and understanding their impact on projects.
- Experience in leading a team of engineers.
- Proficient in relevant design software, such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Demonstrated problem-solving abilities.
- Familiar with current Health & Safety legislation and best practices.
- Self-motivated with a passion for civil engineering.
