Summary: The Primary Technical Excellence Manager for Transmission & Distribution at Burns & McDonnell is responsible for leading technical authority on substations primary engineering, overseeing multi-disciplinary engineering teams, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. Being a senior technical authority on substations primary engineering, as it relates to power T&D infrastructure. Undertaking senior technical roles on project specific multi-disciplinary engineering teams. Be a lead technical person for substations primary engineering work packages relating to electricity transmission and distribution infrastructure. Where appropriate and required, Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE), as defined by National Grid's procedures, or equivalent role as defined by other clients. Providing technical leadership of engineering input to bids and work winning for the discipline. Act as technical leader in T&D infrastructure substations primary design and coordinate with relevant professional bodies and industry groups. Maintain Continued Professional Development (CPD). Provide strong but supportive general personnel management of line reports, with emphasis on supporting continued development, providing technical guidance, and establishing training needs.

Providing technical leadership of engineering input to bids and work winning for the discipline. Growing and enhancing the substations primary section engineering capability, aligning it to the UK business. Technical development, competence management and career path support within the substations primary section. Assume recruitment responsibility, reviewing CVs, interviewing, preparing recruitment documentation and on-boarding new recruits into the UK substations design team along with the HV Plant section manager. Leadership of the technical quality of outputs for the substations primary design team. Ensuring that the design meets customer standards, specification, Eurocodes, British Standards and good industry practice standards.

Provide technical leadership and support to the Burns & McDonnell Substations team based in BMI, Mumbai, India. To include training, competence management, career development and capability assessments in support of BMI substations primary lead. Supporting the BMI substations primary department manager with recruitment of team members based in Mumbai. Define requirements, reviewing CVs, interviewing, and supporting on-boarding new recruits into the BMI substations primary team. Lead innovation initiatives within the substations primary design/delivery team improving methods of working to improve safety, reduce design costs, construction costs/time and improving efficiency. Support the substations section manager to monitor the performance of staff through performance reviews and lead performance management where required.

Understand, maintain and apply company QA policy and procedures. Ensure corrective action in respect of products, services and the quality system is effective. Drive the introduction of advanced techniques for design delivery for your discipline, resulting in the development of new or improved working methods within the HV Plant team. Undertake technical quality assurance reviews and provide design approval/sign-off, as required, on substations primary engineering designs. Drive 'Safety by Design' approach on all projects, at all times. Support nurturing of a safety and technical excellence culture through emphasis on staff competence, diligence, and responsible attitude. Understanding wider industry best practices and client technical standards/procedures for construction, operations & maintenance, and decommissioning, in order to drive safety, constructability, and operability throughout whole asset lifecycles.

Maintain project compliance to Burns & McDonnell's UK Integrated Management System. Be an ambassador for Burns & McDonnell at all times through acting in accordance with expected high ethical and moral standards, and in adherence to Burns & McDonnell code of conduct. Identifying new skills and competencies required within the Burns & McDonnell team to meet business needs and actively supporting development and recruitment of talent, including candidate interviewing. Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in mechanical / electrical engineering, from an accredited institution. Minimum of 10 years of substations primary design experience in high voltage substation design. Professional registration as a chartered engineer, or working towards. Membership of a relevant professional engineering institution (e.g. IET, IMechE, IEEE) Relevant Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH Managing Safely, SMSTS, NEBOSH)

Desirable Experience fulfilling the role of Contractor Design Approval Engineer (CDAE). Formal training in CDM 2015, Temporary Works, and Impressed Voltages. Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Health & Safety legislation relating to design and construction work in the electricity supply industry. Understanding of the requirements of relevant UK Environmental and waste management legislation. Understanding of current Construction (Design & Management) Regulations, and experience of discharging all required duties of the CDM Principal Designer representative. Good knowledge of National Grid's transmission procedures. Thorough knowledge and experience applying National Grids technical specification, technical guidance notes, and design handbooks relating to substations primary engineering.
