Summary: This role is for a Power Electronics Engineer on a 6-month contract, focusing on the design and testing of DC-DC conversion stages in power electronics modules. The engineer will provide technical guidance and support to the design team while ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards. The position requires hands-on experience with high-voltage power electronics and the ability to troubleshoot complex systems. The role is classified as outside IR35 and requires on-site presence during testing phases.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support and review the design of the DC-DC conversion stage of an on-board power electronics module.
- Support testing and verification activities on existing prototype hardware.
- Provide technical guidance to mechanical and PCB design engineers.
- Demonstrate hands-on experience with high-voltage power electronics.
- Identify, prioritise, and investigate functional issues within complex power electronics systems.
Key Skills:
- Experience in development of power electronic systems such as DCDCs, inverters, or rectifiers at high voltage (>400V) and high power (>10kW).
- Design of gate drives, selection of switching components, filter design, and specification of inductors and transformers.
- Design of low-level analog and digital electronics to interface power electronics to control systems.
- Experience in the design of complex multi-layer PCBs for high-current applications.

An exciting new contract opportunity for a Power Electronics Engineer on a 6 months contract, Outside IR35.
Power Electronics Engineer:
- Support and review the design of the DC-DC conversion stage of an on-board power electronics module to prototype readiness.
- Support testing and verification activities on existing prototype hardware, with the understanding that there is limited scope to influence the established architecture.
- Provide technical guidance to mechanical and PCB design engineers developing an integrated power electronics unit, combining PFC and DC-DC stages into a compact, robust, and manufacturable solution.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with the bring-up and verification of high-voltage power electronics, including:
- Safe working practices
- Appropriate control, measurement, and diagnostic techniques
- Ability to identify, prioritise, and investigate functional issues within complex power electronics systems, driving issues through to resolution.
Required Experience:
- Experience in development of power electronic systems such as DCDCs, inverters or rectifiers at high voltage (>400V) and high power (>10kW).
- Design of gate drives, selection of switching components, filter design and specification of inductors and transformers.
- Design of low-level analog and digital electronics to interface the power electronics to the control system.
- Experience in the design of complex multi-layer PCBs for high-current applications using industry standard toolset.
Location / Working Pattern:
This role requires 3 days per week on-site near Birmingham during testing phases.
